The 22-year-old former law student, whose own father has disowned him and called for his execution under Islamic law, was sentenced to four years by a court in Alexandria.
Would you call for the execution of your own child if they spoke out against your beliefs?
I find this practice disturbing, disgusting, deprive!!!

Tut,
You may not realize this however, the foul language came from some idiot who did not like my question. He was rude and ignorant and I threw it right back at him, and he got his comment deleted.
As far as your comments, I am never afraid of a differing opinion or point of view.
And that potentially someone from the region within which the story originated, commenting and elaborating about the issue is actually quite interesting.

I am not religious so understand that your ... " oh the christians are hypocrites too" and/or your "the jews, christians bla bla sacrificed also" only helps solidify in my mind that all the religions indeed ARE fairy tales.

I am an Egyptian and I have read what the guy wrote in Arabic.
Let me first say that the idea that “whose own father has disowned him and called for his execution under Islamic law” is garbage and I did not hear of it most probably it is a smear by the reporter.
I can assure you of the following
1- the guy did not insult Islam in any way shape or form
2- the guy criticized some of the clergy for trying to force the election of the president down the throats of the Egyptians as an Islamic duty
3- The crime of insulting Islam was giving as a cover to force people not to think about what he said was true or not
In the history of Islam, people were ENCOURAGED to criticize the Caliphs who came after Prophet Muhammad PUH to a great extent without calling it a crime.
During the time of the rulers who came after the caliphate some criticism was allowed depending on the ruler and the circumstances but tyrants would not accept any criticism.
So the rule against the poor guy has nothing to do with Islam it is just a tyrant carrying out his rule not Islam rules.
God bless
Added later
I removed the foul language comment and posted the following correction
I am sorry to report that point 1 and the comment I had about the father calling for his son execution are not correct. I depended in my information on an opposition newspaper but from two western newspaper they are confirming that the guy insulted the Prophet PUH. but I still stand by the conclusion, the guy was tried and convicted for insulting the president and the other accusations are to cover it up
Nothing I like better than a fruitful discussion on yahoo. May God bless all of you

I'm sorry, I didn't realize you wanted answer only from Muslims (so many questions here have such poor grammar and punctuation that I have taken to getting the general idea and overlooking the details because so many are so hard to decipher).
If you want me to delete my answer, I will.
That is really how these people believe.
Much of the Middle East has an honor/shame-based society.
There are three pillars of societies:
1. Right/wrong (the West--very law-oriented)
2. Fear/power--the animist societies
3. Honor/shame--the Mid East
That is why they have honor killings for fornication and converting from Islam. The offender has brought shame onto the whole group (family, clan, ethnic group). That shame can't be eliminated easily--often the offender must be killed in order to restore the group's honor. That is why parents, children, brothers and sisters turn against each other when one has committed a shame--the offense goes far beyond what Westerners can comprehend.
To get a taste of it: how would you feel if your younger sibling did something really really embarrassing in school (you attend the same school)? Why might your friends tease you about it? We have a smattering of honor/shame in our culture, but it doesn't drive it like it does in the Middle East.
And, no, I would not call for the execution of my child if they spoke out against my beliefs. But I would feel deeply grieved and, yes, shamed.

That's shameful dude. I feel ashamed of what happened, and surprised of the magnitude of fascism and stupidity that rules the country to stop freedom of speech and all freedoms that is associated with it (the right of information, human rights, freedom to initiate political parties, etc..). They are all connected, and the people who benefit from the existing regime and the existing prevailing ignorance in dealing with issues seem to fight ANY attempt in the freedom path. because they fear it may bring up a chain reaction and encourage the people to claim more.
I personally, don't believe that the father said all this stuff at his own will, i guess he was somehow forced to say so. If not, the this man is sick and i can't imagine how a father can do that to his son regardless of his beliefs.
I just wanted to comment on something said by Tut, about the freedom of speech against Caliphates after the prophet's death. This information is totally untrue. i call myself a defender against any false accusation about Islam. but this one is just not true.
I think you need to read history books about the Caliphate's history.

In order to put this in perspective one should consider the Catholic Church and its trial of Galileo. Quite often the problem is more of the powerful using religion as a weapon then any real crime against ( insert Deity/phophet name as needed ).
There is a major battle happening in Isalm right now. Those that read and follow the Koran as it is written and those that twist it for thier own purposes are at war. Christians saw this in the Reformation when Martin Luther took on the catholic church.
It is almost always a response to abuse of religion as a form of power.

So much for tolerance. It appears the Muslims are closing ranks to protect the extremists, who were the ones he attacked. We hear so much about 'the extremists do not follow Islam', 'the extremists do not represent Islam'. Then why do the Islamic authorities protect them from any form of criticism? They condemned him for attacking Islam. He actually attacked the extremists so the Egyptian authorities are saying the extremists represent Islam. That is logic, pure and simple. It is fact and can only be denied by those who will not see the truth.

From my point of view, I see a trouble maker looking for trouble by spreading lies and propaganda, pissed the public and was about to start a war. The authoraty however, arrested him before things could get ugly to ensure peace.
