"But you are not to be called rabbi (teacher), for you have one Teacher and you are all brothers. And do not call anyone [in the church] on earth father, for you have one Father, who is in heaven. And you must not be called masters (leaders), for you have one Master (Leader), the Christ."

How so? By calling people "Rabbi" or "Father"?

What are you going to call the man who your mother (I assume) married, who provided half of your DNA, who (hopefully) helped raise you? And what do you call a Jewish man who has, in his religion, earned that title?

I see that you've added some brackets and interpretation already to counter the "Daddy" argument, so I can only assume that you really have an issue with calling priests "Father." It's a WORD. A title of respect. It could have just as easily been "Shepherd." Catholics know that God is our creator and our source and yada yada yada. It means little more to us than calling someone Mr. or Miss or Mrs. or Sister or even Pastor.

If you have such a problem with titles and honoriffics, fine. But really, I think you put too much emphasis on them.

Because Jesus and the apostles disregarded it as well.

Jesus was just making a point. He wasn't issuing another commandment.

The word "father" is used 370 times in the new testament.

About half of those times, either Jesus or one of the apostles is talking about someone other than God.

Well, the word rabbi isn't the same today as it was back then. The translation back then was "my one who has much" (rav is the root Hebrew word for many, multitudes, much). Today, it simply means "teacher."

The gist of the meaning is: Do not accept anyone's attempt to make you their master, or their source of supply. There is only One who is your/their Master and Source of supply.

The pope is definitely one whose office has been placed in that position. I also think a great many pastors of protestant churches are guilty of this.

Now read the rest of the chapter it explains it very clearly why you just have to have eyes to see what is written in the scriptures.
Read verse 6-7
They love the place of honor at banquets and the most important seat in the synagogues. 7 they love to be greeted in the marketplaces and to have men call them Rabbi.

Verses 11&12 are what that teaching is all about. Why do you forget the most important part? What you quote is build-up. You also neglect to mention Jesus is talking to the pharisees.

Wow. That is a good question, though a bit obscure. I think many people pick and choose which bible passages to listen to and which ones to disregard. There are many examples of quotes in the bible that are completely ignored because following them would be ridiculous or impossible.

It's because they don't care what the bible says, they want the prestige and glory of being called "Father" or "Pastor" when the glory belongs to God.

Matthew 12:34 says  Offspring of vipers, how can YOU speak good things, when YOU are wicked? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. 35 The good man out of his good treasure sends out good things, whereas the wicked man out of his wicked treasure sends out wicked things. 36 I tell YOU that every unprofitable saying that men speak, they will render an account concerning it on Judgment Day; 37 for by your words you will be declared righteous, and by your words you will be condemned.”

He was trying to make a point, you are just isolating part of the message, that is why you do not understand.
