If we file jointly does that mean that we would be filing one income tax return with both our info on it, or would we be filing 2 returns with both our info on each one? Does it make a difference that we live in 2 different states? That were filing online(e-file)?

Your marital status on 12/31 determines how you can file. You will almost always do best filing a joint return. That's one return with both of your incomes listed on it. If you file separate returns, you'll almost always pay more tax.

You'll need to file state returns as well. Since you lived in different states, you'll have to check with the state authorities on how to file. Some states will allow separate returns even if you filed a joint Federal return and others require you to file the same status as your Federal return.

Filing a joint return means filing one return with both of your information on it. If you live in different states, then depending on what those two states are, your state returns could get somewhat complicated to file so that only the income taxable in each state gets taxed there.

Good luck.

You file one return for both of your incomes and deductions, as a joint return.

For state purposes, you must allocate your incomes and deductions by state.

My suggestion is for you to contact a tax practitioner (CPA) to prepare your taxes for you. He can determine whether you might save money if you file jointly or separately.
