People are a trinity; a body, soul & spirit. Some have died spiritually (by rebelling against God purposely) and aren't saved yet, born of His Spirit.
The wages of sin is death, so everyones physical body dies. But the soul & spirit go to a place God has prepared for them. For those born again, born of His spirit, redeemed by His blood, those go to heaven (soul/ spirit) to be with the Lord (and they will be part of the first resurrection when they get a new everlasting physical body also). Those who lived their best life, yet never rejected or accepted Jesus Christ as Savior (because it wasn't presented correctly), their souls go to a place of rest until judgment day. For those who have rejected Jesus Christ Salvation purposely & rebelliously their souls go to hell fire until judgment day.
For the embryos, babies & children who haven't purposely rebelled against God, they will also go to heaven in the soul/ spirits.
Anyway, this is what Gods answer to me when I asked God a similar question. We are a trinity, made in the image of God (Elohim). Each part of us have who we are. Also, our body has a voice, our soul has a voice & our spirit has a voice. We hear with our physical ear, our spiritual ear & our soul ear. But we are one person. Our body is covering of our soul & born again spirit.

Many different religions have different answers to this question. If one is considering it from a biblical perspective, one comes away with the understanding that when your body dies, you die too. According to scripture, nothing survives the death of the body. Death is the absence of life. There is no consciousness in death. For a personality, thoughts, emotions and such to continue to exist, there would need to be consciousness. Thus we read in Ecclesiastes 9:5 that the living are conscious that they will die but the dead are conscious of nothing at all.
Think of Lazarus spoken of in John chapter 11. He died. Jesus of Nazareth resurrected him. Live people do not need resurrection. Dead people do.

Read '3 Pillars of Zen' or 'A Course in Miracles'. And then see if you get motivated to find out for yourself with a direct experience. No amount of words or beliefs or perceptions will satisfy -- people can believe ANYTHING -- and they create virtual realities based on this. Just look around us - Christians create their reality, Muslims do, too, Wiccans create their virtual reality as well. We can believe anything we want to and, sure, it will give life meaning if we adopt it but it's living a virtual reality. The only real thing is to experience Reality directly. I used to think it was ******** but I had some minor experiences that blew me away. As the Zen master at Zen Mountain Monastery is fond of saying, we all think we're this 'bag of skin' (and this includes the whole body -- the personality, the individuality, the individual consciousness, etc.). When the illusion goes away, a person experiences themselves as part of that which has always been -- and it's just 'one' thing (which means ALL of us are that SINGLE thing) and it's beyond form, imagination, etc. Whatever it is, this direct experience caused unbounded and overwhelming joy -- one guy in '3 pillars of zen' couldn't sleep for a couple of days because of the incredible joy. The issues of life and death were resolved finally. But .... most of us instead want to stay with our beliefs because they're easier so ... whatever you choose, don't feel guilty. It's whatever we're ready for...

I suppose it depends on if you believe in God and Heaven or hell. I think your personality thoughts emotions etc. are all part of your soul which will go to Heaven or Hell depending how you lived your life and if you asked for forgivness of your sins. No one on earth can really say what exactly happens because we aren't dead yet, and cant come back once we are to tell what happens. I just hope to go to Heaven, I dont like the heat THAT much!!

You are talking about your sole. Your body is just a tool to spend time here on earth, that is all. the sole is what matters, your sole is the real you.
A body is not built to last, in time the body will become old and to the point, where it will not work any longer. or maybe something will cause the body to stop working. because the body is matter same as this earth. it is the same way. all that is on this earth will die in time. also the Earth. but the sole lives forever, the sole cannot be killed.
So you see your life does not really stop. in a sense, you will continue. but as your true self,,, your sole.

I believe your soul is energy that is released when you die back into the atmosphere where it blends with similiar energy and is recycled in new people or things. As to your thoughts and memories, I think they pass away with the body. To put it bluntly, it's like reformating your hard drive and giving the computer to someone else.

well it depends on your religion, for instance jahovas witness says there is no hell and the energy just goes out in the world, but then theres the hell, which i belive in, the devil was pretty much kicked out of heaven for thinking he was better than good, i think that the positive energy's are sent to heaven and the negative energy's are sent to Erebus or as English men would like to call it, HELL, so study on your religion, see what your religion think about that energy.

Our body's are like envelopes and our soul is like the letter within. Our body is just a thing that holds our soul for now and when our body dies, our soul will move on.

This energy is nothing more than the electrochemical energy of the brain. This energy dissipates in the form of heat as metabolism ceases.
Nothing coherant of it remains -- you cease to exist.

The mind cannot work without the brain, and the brain cannot work without the breath of life. You cease to exist. The body goes to "dust", until the resurrection, when YHVH brings you back to life.
