do I get whats left over or does the school get to keep that money?

2007-02-22 06:02:14 · 9 answers · asked by curyouss1 2 in Education & Reference Financial Aid

for the past two semsters the school just went back and lowered my grant rewards instead of sending me any money.

I got four different grants and the amount was more than enough to pay for tuition so I used some of the extra for books but I still had some left over and will have even more next semester. When I looked at my account with the school I saw that they debited back the left overe from this semester somehow and I owed .04 then they credited the .04.

In most situations you should be able to get the extra back to use for housing, meals, transportation costs, etc. Therefore, I would ask the financial aid office why they decreased the grants. Possible reasons:
1) It was actually a loan and they didn't want you to borrow too much.
2) The school, for what reason I have no idea, do not include thing like housing into your cost of attendance, which is a financial aid maximum.
3) The grant is limited to tuition and books. There aren't any federal grants that this applies to, but I could see it with state funded grants.
4) They decrease the grants because of some other reason besides cost, such as verified income.
5) There isn't a good reason. If this is the case, I would contact the federal Department of Education via 1-800-4FEDAID.

Here in Michigan if you are not paying back the money like if its grants you do not get it back..If you take out a loan and dont use all of it yes you will get a check..My advice load up on school supplies or other things you can buy from the bookstore (I was able to buy a flashdrive which I could not have afforded otherwise) I am not sure if all states are the same but this has been my experiance the last 2 years

If you get enough money to cover tuition, room and board, the school should cut you a check for the rest of the money (afterall, it isn't the schools money)

Books are usually purchased seperately than tuition, room, and board. The books will usually come out of your credit card or checking account. I don't know of any schools that issue a "book voucher" or a credit to the book store. Maybe some do.

The BOG waiver will waive a lot of the school fees.
Pell grant and cal grant (If you live in Calif.) will cover your tuition...only if your EFC (Expected family contribution) is 0.
For books, if you have left over money from fin. aid, you can use it on that, if not, you can go to the EOPS office and apply for EOP, then you will get a book voucher for books.

No wasy. Most times the school gives you a book voucher and that means that you have to use the schools book store... wich in turn is more expensive.
What you may want to do is go to the library of the school as the professors usually put the books on reserve. You can study for free.

the government has been playing with the amounts, back and forth.

anyway, here is some info in case you want it. take your time and pick through them. you are bound to find something that helps.

try to aim for grants/scholarships more... they are not to be paid back. its confusing sometimes, but just keep applying.

every big (and small) company you see (manufacturer, orgs, corps and groups also) all have grants and scholarships they hand out like candy. Walmart, Kmart, Target, Coke, computer companies etc etc etc

heres a link with a HUGE amount of some available. some you will need to copy and paste into a new window. also, fastweb (take the time to fill it in) will search databases and get back to you with a list of scholarships you qualify for.

Also contact all mens, womens associations in your state, they almost always have grants & scholarships. What ever field you are going into, contact the orgs, associations etc for them; Also check with professional organizations related to your career interests, such as the American Bar Association or the American Medical Association. they also always have scholarships. Research and dig, call then write. Its all worth it.

OVER apply; it doesnt hurt to have too many, and the extra funds can help with housing.
