an honor killing is when a person does something that is percieved as being something that will dishonor their family ...in the muslim culture, and the only way they "believe" to restore that honor is to kill the perpitrator of the offence. So in some areas, if a muslim woman is raped...she herself is to blame and her family killing her will bring the honor back to the family. It's just evil.

Honor killings are not Islamic. They are cultural. They are when a girl has sex outside of marriage or does something else that shames the family like talking to a man other than her father or brother. They kill the girl for shaming the family because they need to get back their families honor.

In general, it's murdering a female relative because she has been sexually dishonored, because she has embarassed her family in some way or disobeyed them, usually by choosing a husband or boyfriend for themselves. In the past, Amnesty International has focused on these killings in Pakistan, but high profile cases have been publicized in India as well. It seems to be a Central Asian phenomenon that crosses religious boundaries.

Killing a girl because she was "dishonored" AKA, she got some, or was raped. It is seem as an insult to the family, so to end the insult, they kill the girl.. pretty sick, if you ask me..
