How does sonar and radar equipment enable them to do it

With the sonar, trawler fishermen can actually "see" fish well beneath the surface. Then they drag their nets to scoop up these schools of fish or whatever. It's hard to get many open water fish in a trawl, but trawling along bottom structure will get fish which congregate on the structure.

But dragging the net along the bottom rips up coral, seaweed, and so on, as well as whatever fish and other creatures are there. This destruction can take years to recover, and this reduces the habitat fish need to survive.

The fish caught in a trawl net are generally crushed or suffocated, and when the trawler finally stops, any unwanted fish are tossed over the side. In the Sea of Cortez, the shrimp trawlers scoop up something like 10 pounds of "bycatch" for every pound of shrimp. That's a lot of wasted fish.

There are lots of better ways to catch fish than trawling.

Why is no one taking this very interesting question seriously?

The trawlermen often know where the fish are likely to be just from their knowledge of the sea, their experience or listening to other trawlermen bragging about their catch over a couple of beers.

Sometimes they use electronic fish finding equipment.

Like someone said just now, apart from that they use a net shaped like a conical bag and drag it behind the boat scooping up the fish.
