Well,I'd recommend "Elements of general linguistics" by Sharad Rajimwale.
It's a very useful book &I've studied it in my first year at faculty.
The ISBN is 81-7581-158-7

Another useful reference is "Elements of general linguistics" by Martinet, Andre .the ISBN is 0226508757

i am addicted to this book!!!

the cambridge encyclopedia of language second edition

david crystal

university press

i know amazon had the first edition on site a couple weeks ago. dunno if it's as good as this one. it's amazing because it will take you through the sociology of language and the mathematics of language and tie it all together. i believe you really can't understand one part without the other. it goes into history and all and gives you many key names of people who have dedicated a lot of their work to linguistic studies. i'd reccommend this book to anyone who cares about this sort of stuff!! i bet there are few, hahah...
