I am a criminal justice major with a juvenile emphasis. If you want to go into juvenile probation and not social work, I strongly recommend that you have a criminal justice major. Honestly, most social workers are NOT prepared to work with juvenile delinquents after graduation. I graduate next December and I have already been involved in internships in detention facilities. I'm prepared for what the job requires. Social work majors generally don't have what it takes to work closely with such youths.

You would want to study social work. The two career fields you just mentioned are social work related fields. For most positions you need at least a bachelors degree, with some requiring a masters degree. This is a great field to get into, but be aware that the pay is not too high. You can certainly make a respectable living, but not be particularly wealthy.

A degree in Psychology or Social Work would be a good start.
