I think it takes persistence, and you have to have God on your side and know, somewhat, or, believe at least, that you are doing what you should.
Many people strive for the wrong things.
I know what you mean...
I think the answer is that you have to keep trying, whether it's the same thing or maybe in finding out that you are better at something else.
There is a lot more to success in life than what we might see in a situation. But, I'm totally on key with your question, it's a good one.
Intelligence is also not the same as possessing other characteristics, such as love, which is a great reason for people to make it through.

You may have put in efforts without proper planning,not in proper direction and at proper time so that you cold achieve desired results
And if you feel that you had taken proper care at appropriate time then check out for any unforeseen events that affected you or otherwise call it a bad luck.

time is important factor may be you need to give more time to get something. some of them needed less time to get the things because of the previous birth sanskars or intelligence.the God can not do unjustice with anybody He want to teach you more for the permanent happiness of that successs.or something is in your favour which you do not know at the moment.
