Toyota Corolla if you can get one at £500. Providing its had just a slight bit of maintence.. they keep on going through hell and high water. Doesn't take any guesswork why all the Arab countries use Toyotas. They are built to work and keep going in all kinds of wretched conditions.

There are many bargains to be had at that sort of price.

Don't be put off by people who think you have to pay a lot of money to get a reliable car.

Most Jap cars are very reliable, and the thing you have to look out for most is rust. If you can find a car that's got a service history or owned by the same person for some years, all the better.
If it looks as if it's been looked after properly, (garaged overnight? etc) you're half way there.

Corollas came out tops in the reliability stakes for years. For something smaller, maybe a Starlet, or Nissan Micra.

I would advise you against it. You get what you pay for.

You can get cars even cheaper, for £200, £100, but they are probably past their best days and have lots of problems. You think you save money by buying a car for £500 but you will just end up paying a fortune for repairs and the car will pack up after a few months.

I think than any car that costs less than £1000 is not worth it.

Ford Escort. Easy to get hold of. Easy to fix. Great panel of spec on, and you can slap all sorts of cheap bits on it. Alloys etc. And best of all, because they stopped making them in 2001, the bottom has dropped out of the value, so you can expect to pick up one of the last ones at trade price for less than £1500 so you are looking at one around about N or P reg for your money! Maybe even better. I picked up a low mileage L reg for only £300 with a great stereo, 4 new tyres, 3 new spares and new clutch and exhaust. The seller even paid for it to be MOT'D for me pre-sale just to off-load. BARGAIN and she runs like a river!

For that kinda dough, don't expect to be looking for any specific make or model. If you find a car for that price that's in good nick, looks smart, drives well & has a year's MOT, buy it! Doesn't matter if it's a Mini or a Mazda, you can't be choosy. It can be done, though, I've had a few old bombs that only cost a few hundred quid & had a couple of years service from them.

citrons go for not a bad price and are fairly decent and reliable. the only cars that hold there value are audi bmw vw and other prestiege cars. fords vauxhall's are probably your best bet as they go at resonable prices. you might find a bargain if you go to auction. however if you do try and take some1 who knows there way around a car as you need to look for all the usual tell tale signs of problems.

Look for a 1991 Honda Accord, the 2.2i 4 Wheel Steer, it had everything full electrics, heated seat, powersteering, cruise control, full leather, it was a real modern car even by todays standerds. and still did 135mph without any mods. powerful, relieble and I paid £450 for mine off ebay and it was perfect with 12 month MOT
