I taught mine how to play croquet in the yard. (to a certain point) at that age. Even though I had to help them with the mallets and such, it was fun!

Tetherball is another good one for small children, don't have to worry about the ball getting away and being chased into the road, down the hill, etc. Just make sure that it is a soft ball.

Of course, there are the old standby's like blowing bubbles, teaching them to jump rope, tag, hide and seek, but remember, with the young age, to keep a sharp eye on them so they don't hide in dangerous spots. :)

I would say no to hide and seek, just because with a one and three year old you want to keep them insight at all times!

You could play duck duck goose, follow the leader, simon says, or I spy.

I like to play I spy with my son and his friends, we take walk in the backyard and do things like I spy a lady bug, I spy a bird in the sky. This is fun for the older toddler and the good for the one year old!

Hide and seek - the 3 yr old will love to hide from you - giggling away as you pretend you have no idea where they are hiding! and the one yr old will follow suit! - don't let them get too good at it thou!! lol
another one that mine adored - but its more to keep them happy if you are busy outside - is fill small buckets with water and then give them both a paint brush - like the sort you use to decorate with - and they can "paint" the walls outside of the house.. it keeps them amused for ages!!!

try hide and seek, its a bigger version of peekaboo or try rolling a ball back and forth. it helps hand and eye coordination.
