I need to postpone my enlistment date to register for school and stay on my parents health insurance until I leave for the air force? I told my recruiter but his advice was kinda shady... anyone have any ideas or advice....? I JUST GOT OUT OF THE HOSPITAL! ITS IMPORTANT THAT I HAVE HEALTH INSURANCE! My parents insurance will not cover anyone over18 if they are not full time students! I already went to MEPS and got a date. need to know if i can change it!

YES, YOU CAN. They will try to feed you a line of crap like being dishonorably discharge from the MEPS program. Everything is negotiable, but they don't want you to know that. The only problem is that you can't be enrolled in the MEPs program for more than a year before entering active service. But nothing is final until you are sworn in.

I was signed up for the NUKE program and changed my mind at the last minute at the MEPS station, and they tried to make me take Mess Specialist ( A COOK). I told them no and they tried to convince I had to because nothing else was available then threatened me with Dishonorable discharge from the MEPS program. I said, Okay, call the recruiter and have the them come pick me up and take me home. Then the recruiter tried to convince me. I stuck to my guns and magically a position opened up in the advanced electronics field while I was waiting for the recruiter to pick me up.

yes, you can push it back.

BUT.. you can only be in DEP for 12 months.

If you push it back, you could lose your guaranteed spot for schooling. That means no bonus if you qualified for one, and no getting to choose your job.

another alternative is to try and leave earlier, that way you will be covered under the military sooner.

but what was the reason you were in the hospital? will it present a problem with you meeting enlistment standards now?

yes you can. tell your recruiter that you want to cancel your contract. the second you step out of the car to step into the hotel the day before you ship out for bootcamp, you're tied to your contract. until then, you can back out of your contract at any time. deal with what you have to deal with, then resign later on. i got a buddy at the stationed who signed and backed out for personal reasons 2 times with the marines and once with the navy. it's possible. during the time our unsigned, you and your recruiter'll stay in touch (of course, because the recruiter doesn't want to loose a body to add to his quota). that's probably why he didn't give you a straight out answer. their job is to recruit and send them off to bootcamp a.s.a.p. that's why my recruiter just stared at me when i told him i wanted to stay in dep until june... and i depped in at october. lol. but yah. just back out of your current contract, deal with your issues, then just jump right back in.
