I have a similar problem with my Shih Tzu. He gets out of control barking at animals on TV, people or dogs walking down the street, when guests come over, etc. I keep a small water squirt bottle handy, usually by the front door and whenever he starts to go crazy i give him a little mist. It works so good now that when I am watching TV the bottle can just sit on the coffee table and he knows better than to open his yap! If I see that he is about to have an outburst, i pick up the bottle and he runs away. This is an easy non-aggressive way that really had immediate results.

It is hard to tell what kind of past the dog had. Maybe he was in a violent, noisy household and it easily startled. I would suggest working with him by himself and exposing him to subtle noises, and reassuring him it is ok. Make the noise and show him what made the noise. Once he sees it is nothing threatening he should be ok. It will take some work. You did a great thing by adopting a dog, now he just may need some manners training. You could also check into an obedience class. They may be able to help you with this issue as well. PetCo or Petsmart would be a good place for information. I would start with checking with your vet.

With him being in new surroundings he is probably rather nervous and may take time to settle down .
We adopted a dog about 9 years ago and he is the opposite if anyone knocks or walks in he doesnt bat an eyelid ( we think maybe he was hit when he barked ) He does however bark when he plays now . Good luck with your new addition and i hope he will soon realise he is now in a loving home. Good luck

you need to desensitise him to sounds... it is better to get advice from an expert but what you can do is make recording these every day taps, clangs and bangs. get the dog on his own as one-to-one is more effective.... turn the volume down low on the recording and gradually bring it up to a level noticable by the dog.. let him hear the recording repeatedly until he makes no raction to it at... no ears pricking up, or looking toward the noise.... Ignore him until he does this as you do not want to reward the noisy behaviour with any attention... once he is calm you can slightly raise the volume level and repeat the process..
It will take many sessions of this before he is completely calm and desensitised.

Don't react to him when it happens as a daily occurrence either... you need to show him that the noise means nothing to you, and therefore means nothing to him... if he is too noisy just quietly lead him out of the room and don't let him back in until he is calm... you may have to stay with him outside of the room until he calms down but don't pay him any attention until he is calm and relaxed.

All kinds of things have happened to rescue dogs so they oftentake a lot more time to train then puppies... but good luck and well done for rescuing him :)

If they're new sounds he may not be used to them and could be warning you about them. Do you know what kind of home he had before he came to you? Maybe you could desensitise the dog by repeating a noise over and over again so it gets used to it and decides he can't be bothered to bark at it??
Good luck and do persevere. You must be a good person to adopt the dog in the first place.

tell him to shut up ,...... it might be he's just getting used to new surroundings , if he doesn't settle down you will have to try and train him which will be hard as he is 4 yrs. old and not a pup. could this be the reason that the previous owner got rid of him?well good luck as we had a dog like this and it was very annoying and eventually had to give him back to the lady we bought him off of . as the neighbours were complaining about him best of luck!

He's still getting used to all the new noises in his surroundings. I have a 4 month old chow who, although not that bad, barks at the goofiest things. I simply tell her "that's okay" in a quiet calm voice & she learns that whatever it was is not a big deal. it's worked very well, and did for my {now in doggie heaven} other chow.

good luck!

because the noise alerts them. You have to work with the lab on a psychological level. Not all barks are the same. (scared, mad, happy) Figure out which one it is and work from there

it can be because dog's hear 7 times louder than humans which means a car engine is pretty loud for them. i think they get scared or just want to protect themselves incase something happens. If your dog is new he still needs to get used to the house and his new life. don't worry, it will change after a few weeks!! happened to my dog too!!
ps.: check out this website!! its about excessive barking
