I don't understand this theory at all.
If God is the perfect being then why would He feel the need to be worshipped? Surely He has complete inner contentment and would feel no urge to have people praise him or bow down to Him. Also, if he did make us why are we so flawed? God wouldn't make any mistakes or would foresee anything we could do wrong and put it right at the drawing board stage surely because He's perfect? The only other reason I can think of is that He made us for His own entertainment. But, again, does a perfect being get bored and need entertaining? I would have thought not.

Good answers (I love silly answers too) but nobody is really explaining WHY a perfect being would want fellowship or need people to choose to follow Him. Perfection is just that. It's not flawed by needs.

Ok, I'll rephrase a bit. Seeing as so many answers are pointing out that God gave us free will and that's why we can choose to do bad things etc. my rephrased question is: Why would God create us with free will to choose? Again, is it for entertainment or because he made a mistake or feels the need to be followed and worshipped? If so He can't be perfect and yet He is supposed to be.

You are correct.
A perfect being does not need or want anything. If it has desires it can not be considered perfect.
A perfect being can not be considered perfect if its creations are also not perfect, just as one would not be considered an expert chef if they burned every cake they made.
God therefore is not perfect because he has the desire (or need) to be worshipped, and made a pretty poor creation.

Why is it considered that if you NEED something you are imperfect? If we are made in God's image then we must be a reflection of him, therefore God is like us in that he has desires too. The fact that we have needs and desires doesn't mean we are weak or imperfect it is just a necessity: to be alive requires certain things or we die.
It was God's plan all along to create us, he created the universe FOR us! He didn't create it all and then fiddle with his chin, pick his nose and think now what shall I do!
A good book to read on this subject is "And So He Made The Stars Also", it completely explains using physics and maths how impossible it is that we are an accident / not created at all.
Anyway he created Man for his pleasure and then realised that man needed to be with Woman. See even God can create something and then make adjustments, we are like him! It doesn't make him imperfect it makes him intelligent which I'm rather glad about!

The easiest answer: for a laugh!
The next easiest answer: I don't know, I'm not God - you'd have to ask him.
A possible answer: Because he's lonely? Seriously, so much of God is about love and relationships that it would seem that God is a social being, and so it would be logical to assume that he simply desires our company. As for making us imperfect, well, he gave us free will, our greatest and most terrible gift. With it, we all fall short, but without it, we would not be able to turn to him. I imagine that he'd rather have us as willing disciples and not mindless slaves, and so he granted us free will - the choice of whether or not to bow to him.
By the way, I think this is an excellent question. I wish I had some scripture to reference, but I guess I'm going to have to go do my own research now! Thank you.

God could have made robots or puppies to bow to him and love him unconditionally.
The fact that man can choose whether to love or hate God is the only logical answer. He desired fellowship with willing entities.

Fellowship
true willing, fellowship
by our chose
out of our love to Him
God gave us chose (free will) just because you see bad in the world dose not mean God agrees with it. It is the direct result of our free will. we are free to follow Him or not. we will all stand up for our choices one way or another both here and after.

Apparently the universe was supposed to be a gift from God the Father to God the Son, as an expression of love. I don't think that he gets bored.

A moment of weakness, perhaps?
ABSOLUTELY AGREE with you that if God is the perfect being then why would He feel the need to be worshipped.
I asked some theologists this question, they never gave me a satisfactory answer!

Man invented god. No idea why though - how can these people feel so superior to all non-believers when they've chosen to feel inferior and unworthy of something that doesn't even exist!

Well, if you create a universe it would be a shame not to use it. Seriously, I think there may well be a God but He did not create us to suck up to him. I don't know why He bothered, but I'm glad He did.
Thanks, God ! I'm really enjoying myself !

he didnt have a dog or a cat or even a goldfish, so he created man. its obvious.
If I am God's pet, I still look up to him, but sometimes I chase men down the street and bark a lot, its probably entertaining to him also.
I shouldnt worry too much.....
