Here's how I decided which branch I would go into. I talked to each of the recruiters for the branches and found the Navy and Army recruiters not dull and full of themselves. I'd rather been around people in the Army or Navy because of that reason. I of course joined the Army because I did not want to wear the Navy uniform and be called a seamen.

Don't worry, no need to be country specific or anything. I'll just assume we're both American. The Navy and the Air Force, as far as educational benefits, offer pretty much the same thing. The Navy has less women so, in theory, a better chance of being raped by your fellow crew members but the Air Force has a longer history of mistreating women personnel and some of the more "interesting" rape stories are from the AF. The Navy does a random lottery of sailors to see who's going to be joining the Army to go to Iraq (I've got a brother-in-law in there now who has lost two friends to the Army via the lottery), the Air Force has actual ground troops in Iraq.

Really, the question is, and this is the only reason I haven't joined the Air Force despite the fact that I've wanted to since I was 15 (and am now 22), how soon do you want to be raped while risking your life for a country that won't protect you from your fellow sailors or airmen?

Honestly though, my father is active duty Army and he's had the occasion to meet some of the women in other branches. He's told me, time and again, that the military does nothing to protect them, most of the time the military doesn't even believe them. I suppose there are a handful of women who claimed rape so they wouldn't be sent off to fight but is that really a valid reason to call every woman a liar?

From someone who spent their career in the Air Force, I would say the Air Force!

The Air Force has great opportunities for women, and the jobs in the Air Force provide a great ability to transition to a civilian career whether you stay for only a 4 year enlistment or stay for a career!

The Air Force also spends a lot of time educating, training, and equipping you with skills that will prepare you for real life challenges and situations.

I do have the utmost respect for my Navy colleagues, and
I did have the opportunity to serve a tour in a Joint Force environment where there were Navy personnel. As I compared the differences between us, I was glad I served with the Air Force.

I wish you the best of luck whichever Service you choose!

I would say Airforce. When I went to sign up for the national guard, the girl that was going to the navy didn't get in because they said there were no jobs for girls at that time....i think the airforce is easier

Adambrus - as soon as you are man enough to come do the job I've been doing in the Air Force for the last 10 1/2 years, you can talk about being a wimp. I an explosive ordnance disposal tech; we're the guys who are disarming IED's on the sides of roads in Iraq and Afghanistan and destroying all the found munitions items.

That would be up to you. I spent 20 years in the Navy and have seen and done things that some people would only dream of. Around the world 11 times and 82 different countries. I've have seen cultures and participated in many rituals and customs of many different lands. I've seen tornado's at sea (from a distance) that would take your breath away. Whales in every ocean are awesome to see. Hump backs in the Atlantic, Blue whales in the south Caribbean, Okras in the Antarctic ocean. Lava flows just off the Hawaii coast are just unreal to see. But you be the judge.

As an 18 year verteran of the Army, I'd tell you to definately join the Air Force. The quality of life is much better. You are more likely to get your job guaranteed in the Air Force.

By the way, all those telling you to join the Marines, I know several women who were in the Marines and they tell me they were treated like third class citizens because of their gender.

That depends in large part on what you want to do. Talk with recruiters from each branch and look at the opportunities open to you. Consider also locations of duty stations, advancement pace and enlistment/reenlistment bonuses.
Also, consider that if you want to actually be in the military, the Air Force barely qualifies.

I have had family members and still have a few left on active duty with both services. Each has it pros and cons. Housing and billeting are better in the USAF but the assignments are limited. The USN offers the advantages of a wider career field.

Don't join either one. Become a real woman and join the Corp. The navy and air force are for wimps.
