A man convicted of gunning down two law enforcement officers during a dispute about his family's land was sentenced to death Wednesday a little more than an hour after jurors began deliberating.

Steven Bixby, 39, showed no reaction as he was condemned for the murders of sheriff's Sgt. Danny Wilson and State Constable Donnie Ouzts.

Bixby and his parents were upset that the state wanted a 20-foot strip of land near their home to widen a highway. Authorities said he and his father, who also is charged with murder, threatened to attack any officer who set foot on their property.

Wilson was shot on Dec. 8, 2003, while standing on the front porch of Bixby's parents' home. Authorities say Ouzts, who arrived to check on Wilson once radio contact with the officer was lost, was shot as he stepped out of his patrol car.

I'd like to make him watch his dad die before he got put out of his misery. I hope the cops families sue and make his mom homeless in her old age.

I think the whole clan should fry.

The sick thing is that the only reason this guy was vilified was because the officers never got a shot at him. If the police had seen it coming and were able to protect themselves we would have the media screaming about the police murdering innocent people. Armed innocent people trying to murder cops, but still innocent people.

My husband has been a Law Enforcement Officer since age 21. 13 years and counting. I have nightmares about this type of situation all the time. My thoughts are with the the officer's families and co-workers.

Why do you want to harm Steven Bixby's mom? She is not responsible for Steven's actions. She also is not responsible for her husbands actions. I do not believe in the death penalty, I don't feel it is our right to judge people. What happened was horrible and I am truly sad. Instead of stating your theories here, why don't you try talking to a therapist. There you can better be listened to and better heard.

I'm actually opposed to the death penalty for spiritual and intellectual reasons. HOWEVER, I totally feel you on this. Being opposed to the death penalty often takes all my energies (and I wasn't always opposed to it), because the emotions evoked by actions like those of these... animals? idiots? scum? One can't even evoke a venal enough label, sometimes... the emotions evoked are very raw, and the urge to vengeance is very, very human.

You have very little regard for human life and suffering. I feel for the officers and their families, and for Mr. Bixby's family. No one has a right to kill another person.

I agree, this case calls for the death penalty.

What is the disposition of the case against his dad?

His mom, as I understand, is culpable as well, since she knew of his plans to "attack any officer who set foot" on their property. What will become of her -- legally?

So really, this doesn't make you much better than the person you would like to give the needle to. And obviously, the law is taking care of it....

Now, I'm not condoning what the guy did... I think it's awful that you would want to make his mom homeless in her old age. Did she do anything????

Wow... you really are a revengful person....

I agree that they should be put to death not because of revenge but because the punishment fits the crime.
