example i have 2 updates for IE

WindowsXP-KB883939-x86-ENU.exe

and

WindowsXP-KB925454-x86-ENU.exe

the 883939 is obviously much older than 925454, and thus the versions of files carried by 925454 are newer than that carried by 883939. if i try to install 883939 after installing 925454, will the newer file versions be replaced by older versions? (eg for a file like mshtml.dll)

If you have SP2 installed you don't need to install anything from SP1 It you try to install an old SP1 update SP2 will tell you, you can't install it so don't worry you can't do anything wrong.
If you're still worried after installing an update you can put you mind to rest by paying a visit to Microsoft updates when you do the scan it'll tell you if you need anything.
