My son is only 16 months old and he does things that most 2 and 3 year olds can't do. Yes he still talks like a baby but some times he will surprise us by saying some random word he heard us say (Potato Salad, Telephone, Price is right (price-i-ri)) He knows the names and can point out eveything on his face (eyes, nose, mouth, ears, cheeks, teeth) He knows the names and can point out the colors red, blue, yellow, and green. And last weekend we bought him a potty and he knew what it was right when he saw it. He uses it every day and even knocks on the bathroom door to tell us he needs to go. Could he be a genius?

I can see why you're a proud mom! He seems very advanced. I'm not sure what would qualify a child as being a "genius", but I can see how you could draw that conclusion with everything he's doing. By the way, tell you're son I'm a big Price is Right fan, too (hehehe) - good luck with your bright baby!

He sounds smart but not genius smart. My son said his first word at 9 months old and had an amazing vocabulary by the time he was 18 months. He knew his colors and when you would ask to point out a certain letter on a chart he could do it. He is just a smart kid. Keep working with him. It will help him in school and later in life if he has a head start.

:)

How far a child advances when they are so young is not a precurser to being a genius or super smart. I wouldn't rule it out though, you just have to wait and see. I think my son is super smart (such as he can open child proof bottles at a young 2- turned 2 in November last year) but I have worked in daycare and I have studied this- I know that you cannot tell how smart a child WILL BE by how advanced they are at a young age. You can really start to tell when they are about 4 or 5.

I do know that when a child starts to talk at a super super young age and read, that is a good sign- i.e. I started talking in sentences at 9 months and was reading at 2, could draw extremely well at a young age, etc. most other geniuses have VERY advanced communication and artistic abilities at a super young age.

Congratulations on having a smart little guy. Sounds like you guys are doing a good job of encouraging his speech and learning. Babies learn things at different rates. I wouldn't be quick to say he's a genius, but maybe so. Why not just let him be a baby for a while and continue to encourage him to learn new things? Good luck!

I'm going to be a pessimist...Why does it matter? You will continue to teach him like you have been and he'll absorb all the knowledge that he can. Once he's labeled a "genius" then here comes all the pressures to perform or then it seems that those kind of kids lack in the social department. So, I'd say let the kid be a kid.

I can tell you that my son started speaking at 9 months of age. he could point objects out in the house (such as lamp, light, etc) and name them. he could point out photos of family members and know their names. This all by 9 months. By the time he was your son's age he was speaking in full sentences, knew his shapes, could follow along to certain songs, could count, recognized the alphabet etc. he is now 14 years old and an honor roll student and catches on to everything very fast. Be proud he is so interested in his surrounding and it shows that you spend time encouraging him, but I would rule out the genius factor at this time. ;) If he was reading books and writing sentences then I would say he has genius factors.

It sounds like you're doing a good job teaching him things, but it's a bit early for an IQ test. There's a different between physical and cognitive development. Maybe when he's four or five, you could have him tested if you're still wondering.

He sounds functionally very smart. You won't truly know if he is a genius until he is about 3 years old.

Probably not, he sounds average. My kids did that too. He's very smart, there's no doubt. It's just proof that you are a great mommy and spend the time with your child that he deserves!!!
