You need at least 2 ports or you'll have to buy a switch.... I bought 1. difficult to find, but well worth it.
If I had my choice I'd make sure it had 3 or 4 ports!
dvd/bluray + computer + directv + comcast or extra computer or others!
You can never have too many ports! and the analog ports are for chumps!

Two (perhaps three if you own or plan on purchasing a game console such as the PS3,) HDMI [1] inputs on a display would be ideal. An alternative, though not nearly as convenient or cost effective, is to purchase a fully compliant HDMI/HDCP switch such as the (Simplay HD Verified [2]) Radiient Select-4 Four-Input HDMI Switch/Repeater [3].
For upconverting DVD players you will gain very little by using an HDMI connection though it would help reduce the obsolescence factor and would provide much more convenience by using a single 'intelligent interface' technology.

Well direcTV will take up one HDMI connection. If you don't have a second HDMI connection the upconverting DVD player can use component video instead.
However, if you plan on getting Blu-Ray or HD DVD you'll regret not having a second HDMI port.

The new cable boxes have HDMI connections on them, & so do the newer HD-DVD players, so that enables you to hook up one cable between the TV & the cable box& the HD-DVD to the TV using the other input.

It depends on your audio/video setup. If you have an audio/video receiver, then all of your components go into it, and then the receiver uses just the one connection on the TV. If you don't have an a/v receiver, and all components must connect directly to the TV, then you want more inputs.
