It makes me sad. I've seen these dogs in pet stores with price tags of $1000+. If all they want is a mutt or "mixed breed" they should go to an animal shelter and adopt a dog that needs a home!

I think it is sad that people are getting scammed by the people breeding these dogs. No good breeder would do this, because a truly good breeder is doing so to better a breed. So you're getting the low end purebreeds mixed to make these dogs. They are acually finding a higher level of health problems because of this. It is also wrong to say that a "labradoodle" is hypoallergenic. Poodles are good for people with allergies, but when you mix in a lab, you have a large possibility of having a dog that is not good for allergies. People are ignorant about this though. It is like saying if you could breed a chihuaha and a great dane, all the puppies would be tiny like the chihuaha but have big lips like the great dane. Ummm NO! Some could be small, some large, most medium sized. Some could look like mom, some like dad, most would have a little of both. So for someone to breed to different purebreed dogs together and try to say that they will come up with the same thing everytime is RIDICULOUS!! What I have seen however are alot more dogs heading to the pound because of false reports that they are hypoallergenic because they have poodle in them. I work with the local shelter, and I have seen a ton of doodles come in because the people buying them have allergies and were told that the mix they were paying $1000 for was a special hypoallergenic dog that would fit into this perfect mold the "breeder" set out for them. When reality sets in though, straight to the pound they go. Anyone buying these dogs is contributing to many dogs deaths. It's really sad, but the entire "designer breed" thing is fueled by total ignorance. The only truth to it is that when you mix dogs, there is no absolute as to what you will get. If you want an absolute, buy a purebreed. If you want a mix, go to a shelter and save a life. Above all though, educate yourself!!!!

a cockapoo has been around for about 20 years. they are the orginal designer breed.

KM43 these dogs dont have any better health then purebreeds. if anything mixing a dog such as a pug with a beagle will breate more. begles are active while pugs are too, but pugs over heat very easily. Why mix a breed that wants to run nd hunt while the other part of him is having a breathing attack? It does no justice to mix these breeds. If you want a anitshedding dog geta poodle, not a cross. Its ignorent to just keep on breeding all these stupid mutts and then since people see paris hilton with oen they run out and buy one, completly oblivous to all the health problems it can and will have becuase only crappy breeders breed these dogs.

Ok people will probally get mad at me for this but........ there is no such this as a designer breed. its just people breeding mutts!! plain and simple. you cant just go make up a breed and then have puppies and sell them for a ton of cash its unethical and stupid. and then give them a name too make them look better: puggles,ori-pei ect ect its all a dum gimic that these so called mutt breeders have to make money. its not bettering any bred cause it isnt one and i dont care how long its been around for it isnt an actual breed its a heintz 57 also know as the mutt. and the names they come up with omg.....!!!! I have been a breeder for many years and i find it sad seeing all these breeds being cross bred so that they cant have genetic issues from both sides ect it isnt better these dogs it makes them worse. thats why there is a breed standard (ckc, akc, ect) ok im done ranting..lol by the way imagine if they start crossing bull dogs and shih tzu's ..... the name please???? ~bullsh@t~ drum roll please dang im funny...lol jk

It is ridiculous that people mix breeds and make big buck$ off of a dog that is not a pure breed. To me a mix breed is just that, mixed with more than one breed. Don't get me wrong I love all dogs mixed breed or a full breed but people are really stupid to pay so much for a mix when they can go to the Humane Society or Dog Pound and find a perfectly nice dog, heck those pound dogs should probably cost bigger bucks too since they should also call them designer breeds..All dogs are special regardless of the names people choose to call them but it is crazy to pay big bucks for a dog that is not a Pure Breed.

It's not recognized as an "official" breed unless the AKC recognizes it. And I think the criteria for being recognized is that you can actually "create" a breed that can reproduce itself.

For example, someone tried making a "pug-a-poo," half pug, half poodle. Though the puppies were cute, they were not able to reproduce more "pugapoos," with the same distinguishing markings... two pugapoos can't reproduce a pugapoo.

But two labradoodles CAN reproduce a labradoodle. Hence, the new breed.

Actually these dog breed serve a purpose. Poodles are often breed with other dogs because they don't shed. So people with allergies can have poodles. Also these breeds are less likely to have the conditions that pure breeds have, but they still look like full breeds.

It drives my wife and I nuts. WHat used to be called a mutt and you could get for free or for $50 is now $400-600. It's utterly ridiculous.

I think it's funny how people are stupid enough to pay $400 for a mutt.
