I don't care much about the cut as long as it's short and managable, my cousin used to do it but doesn't have time any more. So I go to a SuperCuts, or Fantastic Sams, etc, I have no brand-loyalty, I go wherever is closer, least busy, or running a special, and I usually pay $14-16 once a month. Then I get the reciept and it has the restaurant-style "Tip" line at the bottom, I always get self consious about this. Are these girls living off of tips, or do they even expecting a tip for a 10 minute job? I don't tip the guy changing my oil, mowing my lawn, or fixing my furnace, and these are all more important services to me than a haircut. And I know the answer from you salon owners/employees, trust me, my wife tips more than my haircut costs, but she gets the perm, color, trim, etc. I'm talking about the strip mall, walk-ins welcome, "short on top, #4 on the sides" type of cut.

This is one of those situations that really annoys me about tips! I've had better hair cuts at those chain salons than at expensive places, and I've never figured out why I should have to tip someone a lot more for a $40 haircut than for a $15 haircut! That whole 'percentage' thing.. GRRR! Same thing applies for servers.. the coffee shop waitress that keeps bringing those refills deserves as much as the server who brings the steak!

So perhaps I'm backwards.. I'd rather tip the person who does a good job for a low price more than the person who does it for a high one!

But yes.. definitely tip that hairdresser :)

Yes, you should always tip for services in which the tip can get you better service. Just remember it like this - TIP is an acronym which stands for To Insure Promptness. If you want to insure you get a better job done on your hair, even if it is the #4, then tip. If you want the guy changing your oil to let you know something may be up with the engine or to give a darn about your car, then tip. If you want your lawn to look a little better, then tip.

When it comes to restaurants, the servers are ONLY living off tips, as now the government has decided to tax servers on the small minimum wage they earn - last I checked here in NYC it is about $2.90!! And after taxes, you receive a "zero check" from your employer which means that the minimum wage you earn by the hours you work are just enough to pay the tax and keep the restaurant legal. Otherwise, servers do not get one penny from the restaurant where they work. And I must say that in the case of restaurants, you tip 18-20 percent of the total check. Doubling the tax doesn't do it. And if you feel that that is too much and you cannot afford to tip a server on top of eating your meal, then don't eat out!!

Yes. Practically everyone who works in a job that is typically tipped - not just servers - makes a very low hourly wage and relies on tips. With a simple, inexpensive haircut costing $15, an appropriate tip is only a couple dollars.

Whenever faced with a situation in which you're not sure how much to tip, ask yourself whether you would ever notice the loss of that extra fifty cents or a dollar that makes a tip go from mediocre to good. Most of us wouldn't flinch at paying $2 or $3 for a Coke in a restaurant, but many people just can't bring themselves to part with that extra dollar for a tip. Remember that a good tip can make someone's day, and getting a bad or even worse no tip for a service can ruin it.

Always tip. These girls have gone to beauty school and gotten their certificate just like all other salons. It should encourage you to give a better tip since you're not wasting your money on an overpriced haircut.

My husband tips $3 for a Great Clips or similar place to cut his hair.

The person cutting your hair is working just as hard as someone in a posh salon, maybe harder. Go ahead and peel off a couple bucks for the guy.

Yes I always tip them for a job well done. Most of them aren't paid wages just for being there....so if business is slow they might be there an hour making nothing. So, it would be nice for you to throw a couple extra bucks their way.

Yes, but not much. Just a couple dollars. They work on tips, too.

Or you can do like Dwight on the Office:

"Why tip someone for a job I’m capable of doing myself? I can deliver food. I can drive a taxi. I can, and do, cut my own hair. I did, however, tip my urologist. Because I am unable to pulverize my own kidney stones."

They are providing a service for you, and they do live off the tips.
