A serious answer to your question: for some people, the bible is the one and only source of their theology. Their whole view of Christianity and its teachings hinges on what is in the bible. So yeah, when you ask a question, they quote you scripture.

Dear Question,

I can certainly agree with you on not buying into some things written in books today but that is a different story altogether.

We answer with Bible quotes because the Bible is The Source Document provided by the Author of Life.

The Bible (most translations but not all) is living. As I read it I often feel that it was written directly to me. It is like when you have a picture of a person who was looking into the lens. If you walk around the room it seems the the person in the picture follows you with his eyes.

Have you ever read the Bible from cover-to-cover? I did for the first time 15 years ago and it was so good that I couldn't put it down. I finished reading in 90 days and consider reading it to be the Best thing I've ever done. Now I read it nearly every year and learn more each year.

Quite a few of the people that post here seem to have had all independant thought crushed by religious dogma.

They are taught not to ask questions regarding religion, and to accept only what the Bible says as the truth.

It seems they can only respond to a question by using quotes from the Bible, and occasionally don't even bother to make sure that the quote is actually relevant to the question being asked.

I'm not saying that all believers are like this. I would not be so presumptuous as to paint everybody with the same brush.

It's funny because that reminds me of a job I used to have answering customer service letters for an insurance company. They had a huge database of pre-written paragraphs and we were supposed to enter in the code (g212, b360, c114) for the paragraphs and never add anything to it, lest we get approval, for legal reasons. This is what I think of everytime I see people who answer with scripture.

From there I think either they are NOW trying to keep the "word of god" pure or they don't have the wear-withall to speak for themselves or they think the scripture carries more weight than their own words - and I don't really care all that much, truth be told. Whenever I see scripture I hit the thumbs down and disregard the entire answer. If I believed in that book and thought I could find answers there, I would go there and not to individuals around the globe, via Yahoo Answers.

Peace!

It's human nature to quote written works that are full of wise and trustworthy sayings. Don't be a chronophobe! Just because a book was written a long time ago doesn't mean it doesn't have value for us today. Why is it if someone quotes from Plato or Aristotle, you have no problem with it, but if people quote the Bible you refer to this act as "throwing bible [siq] quotes at you"? This sounds more like religious bigotry than sound rationalism.

I see answers in the other sections too that are full of bible quotes. Sometimes I think it makes people feel better that they can quote a source. Even if it has nothing to do with the question.
Some times they are just there and I think that is a way of showing that they wont go away..
Too bad so many of them don't quote the whole thing. If they did then they would see that it is not saying what they was people to think it is saying.

This is a prime example of why the R&S category should be split into two categories. One for Religion the second for Spirituality. I'm assuming you are a Spiritual person but not a Religious one? For religious people being religious and being spiritual is one and the same, but for spiritual people it may not be (and in here it rarely is). To me it sounds like your questions would be great in a spiritual section/subsection because you don't want scriptural quotes involved in answers, yet you want to ask questions that involve the concept of God.
Maybe one of these days we can get this category divided, or at least a couple of subcategories added.

Many people have thought long and deeply about what is said in the Bible. Just because you think it is 'obviously' not true doesn't imply that it is. Consider: Are you arrogant?
Are you smarter than: Thomas Aquinas? Isaac Newton? The Apostle Paul? I doubt it.
People throw Bible quotes because the believe that the Bible is the word of God. If you knew what God said about something that came up in conversation, wouldn't you consider it relevent?

You wouldn't go to the doctor and not expect him to throw bible medical quotes at you would you ? Just like the doctor has a book he uses to find answers in so do we.As far as codes and all of that we might agree.

Well, it really depends on what the question is. Mostly, I do not use bible quotes, because I am lazy and don't want to look them up. However, if a question is on one of the principles, then most likely a bible quote is necessary.
