Generally yes, unless it's a very casual chat. If you're just chatting with a stranger about the weather while waiting for the bus, I don't think it's a problem, but if you're visiting with a friend and especially when you're talking to a business partner or client, then I think you should either turn your phone off or just pick it up to excuse yourself and say you'll call back later. Some people I know will just pick up the phone, start talking and not even acknowledge me anymore -the one who mostly does this is my boss- and it's so annoying!

Yeah, I've always felt that it's rude, unless you ask the person in front of you to give you a second to take the call. And even then, that only softens the rudeness. But that's just me, personally.

I think it depends. If you're expecting a call or are at work then, no, it's not rude. If you're out and about and your cell phone rings, then it gets to be a grey area. Also, are you talking to a stranger? Family/friend? A store clerk? The context is going to be huge.

there are so many variables; if it's a store clerk, and your a customer and they take the call and your stood there waiting, that's incredibly rude, I mean you got off your butt and came down to the store, the one on the phone should be put on hold.

If it's in someones home it depends on your relationship with the person, you should let the caller know you have company, chances are they will offer to call back when it's more convenient.

Depends on the situation. I will usually look to see who is calling, if it's important I will ask the person to hold on for a moment while I take the call.

Yes. It is always rude. Unless your wife 9 months pregnant or a lose family member is gravely ill, you should just wait and check your messages.

Depends on the person & the circumstance. If you do answer you should say excuse me to the person you are talking to.
