Whey Protein is a powdered form of protein used as a supplement to help facilitate muscle building. A great couple of articles on whey can be found here:

Read through some of it and you should find what you are looking for. For most people, it would be impossible to ingest the amount of protein required to build a lot of muscle on a daily basis without ballooning up. The supplement fills in the gaps.

whey protein is the best stuff for you to gain mass safely and quickly, If you want to gain weight or lean muscle fast then do like I did and get some formula one protein shake. It is loaded with 9g of protein each serving and will put pounds on you in no time. The weight is evenly distributed on your body so you don’t get a belly. Because its full of nutrients too it makes your whole body healthier at the same time. I have been using this for two years, I have put on 65 pounds (over 40 in the 1st year) I am now just under 200 and feeling great. Whether you work out or not this stuff will work for you. Its only available by mail order, I get mine from www.myhealthabcmall.com, go into the sports section and you can find it in there. They have some awesome energy drinks aswell. If you aren’t sure there is a link to email the nutrition coach and he will advise you (you will need a credit or debit card or someone who has one to order). This stuff also tastes great and you just take it twice a day with an ordinary meal. I also use the multi vitamins they have, they have over 20 nutrients in each tablet.

If you are a woman use soy protein. I'm not sure if they have figured out why yet, but women can better utilize soy protein while men can better utilize whey protein. Taking protein after a workout is most definitely effective. It gives your body the fuel it needs to build and repair your muscles. I would recommend mixing the vanilla flavor with milk. It tastes a lot better than when mixed with water and milk is good for you anyway.

though it is expensive

it is the protein from milk
that's all I really know... get the vanilla kind, mix it in water and it tastes like a milkshake! Real good
drink it after your workout
