Very hard thing to do, but you have to hold your ground and don't give in. At some point the person who gets dumped, will recover and move on, simply let that person know that your time was good together, but it isn't working as well as it once did. It is hard for anyone to understand anything when they are upset, so just say what you have to do as gently as possible and then remove yourself from the situation.
Good luck.

Is it your problem that they do not understand something-no matter how many times you've tried to explain it to them? No, it is not. You two were going into different directions and you felt that it was better if you cut things off. That you needed to be alone and do what you have to do, and that they need to do the same.
So, you move on. You do not answer their calls, do not go out with them. Just move on. Hopefully, they will get the message.

You say we want different things out of life. At one point we were on the same page now we are reading two different books. You headed south and I am headed south. We aren't on one accord it isn't working out. Maybe right now it hard to understand because you are upset and your judgment is cloudy but for the longest(then you explain right here the differences)

Just repeat what you have already said, be polite, keep it simple and then be unavailable. Clean break, none of the lets be friends stuff. Breaking up isn't easy, but it happens. They need to accept that.
At some point everyone has been or will be on both sides of love/breaking up, so be considerate but don't back down. If you don't love them...you don't.

Explain simply but honestly. If you two were growing in different directions it doesn't mean that s/he is a moron with no brain. Express your feelings, let her/him express her/his feelings too. If you really decided to break op relationship because you were not happy in it, then do it, but its important to explain WHY you were not happy. Save respect for each other.

Well tell them that you wish to move on and meet other people. Tell her you think it's not wise to get back together and let them know that you both have grown apart a great deal.
Or maybe you are leading them on someway and you don't realize.
Take care

Short and Sweet "I don't feel the same way about you anymore" (Or harsher "I have no feelings for you") And I do not want to see\date you". I need room to breathe and get my life in order. Thank you for understanding. If they still tell you they don't get it, they may be playing dumb to prolong things, Just say "It's over" and don't answer their calls, don't talk to the person, they will "get it" eventually.

Tell them that you are beginning to realize things about yourself that you haven't before. Let that person know that you are interested in other things. Make it totally about you. The other person should realize that people change and mature in different ways, maybe that's why they doesn't understand.
