A period of fasting, praying and almsgiving in penance for the sins commited and to turn to God, to convert. It is a preparation and purification for us to celebrate fully the day of the resurrection, easter. Bt at the same time, is a way to put under control your physical appetites, subjecting them to your will, and strenghtening the spiritual aspect. It's in anothre words, a period of change, of reflection and of triying to be better, a better human being, a better christian. in this period we trascend our natural selfishness and the natural impulse to indulge in whatever our senses ask us to. instead we turn to God alone, and mortify the senses to purge the will of unhealthy attachments to earthly things. We do this after jesus went into the desert to prepare for his mission, where he was tempted by the devil, after being baptized.

Lent is the liturgical (chuch) season the preceeds Easter. The tradition is taken from the scriptures where Jesus spends 40 days and 40 nights in the desert fasting and praying to prepare for his ministry.

The church uses this time as a time of preparation and, as I say, "getting back to basics." We are encouraged to strip away what is extraneous in our lives and renew our prayer life. Catholics will often give something up in an effort to, much like a New Year's Resolution, help us become better people and strengthen our relationship with God. You'll hear people talk about giving up alcohol for Lent, but you'll also find people who give up (or try to the best of their ability to give up) judging people.

Lent is also the final period of preparation for those adults who are converting or being baptized for the first time. They are encouraged (as they have been from the start) to study the scriptures and closely examine their lives so they can be honest with themselves and God.

Catholics have some very specific traditions during Lent. We often attend the Stations of the Cross (or Via Crusis) as a prayer service and reminder of what Jesus suffered for our sakes. We do abstain from meat on Fridays, but that doesn't mean we are supposed to go out and eat lobster; the tradition comes from the time when people mostly ate meat and to abstain from it was a form of fasting. It's a time of repentance and conversion so that when we get to Easter, we can truly celebrate what we celebrate every week.

Lent is the 40 days leading up to Easter. Christians are supposed to give up something or do some kind of act of goodwill during this time to prepare our souls for Easter. This is important because Easter is the holiday that marks a lot of what defines our religion.

It is a time for repentence, prayer, and sacrifice in preparation for Easter Sunday, the day the Lord was resurrected from the dead and redeemed mankind, and reconciled us to God the Father.

A Catholic ritual and belief of sacrifice. Although we need not sacrifice anything because the Christ was the ultimate and final sacrifice.
