Actually, if nails were used, they were driven through his wrists, not his palms. But sometimes the victim was tied to the cross with ropes, so there might not have been any nails at all.
The only gospel that mentions hand wounds is John. Apparently its author didn't know what really happened and so just made up this part of the story. What's funny is that people who claim to have stigmata usually mistakenly put the wounds in their hands because of the error.

I don't see anything funny about a man that loves the human race so much his WRISTS were nailed to that cross...not his palms. it is scientific knowledge that the wrists are able to support your weight. I think you need to have RESPECT for the almighty. He holds your very life in the palms of those nail scarred hands and if he wants to, he will end it anytime, anywhere. and let me assure you that one day you will have to stand before the throne of God and stand accountable for everything you say and do in this life, and may I just say it is a terrible thing to have to stand before an angry God, so if i were you, I'd watch what I say from now on. don't say I didn't warn you when your day comes.

It would have to have been through his wrists - the palms of the hands won't support a body that is being crucified. I think stigmata probably has more to to do with psychology than history or medicine.

they nailed the wrists of everybody that was crucified that is the way it was done. oh i see aren't we the clever one. you weren't asking for real, you were asking to make fun of something you do not believe in. Now tell me, what is the point in that? Why you waste your time making fun of something you believe has no merit. If you don't that is fine, find something useful to do with your time though.

Because in order to hang Jesus from a cross, they had to nail his wrists* to the horizonal part of the cross so that he may hang, making it harder for him to breathe if he were to not use his legs. With your arms in that position over your body, it puts pressure on your lungs unless you were able to push your body up using your knees and feet. If one were alive still because of it, the knees would be immedately broken.

It was his wrists actually, the palms would have ripped out by his weight.
