I guess it depends on the experience and maturity of the person involved.

I should say that I grew up in a different time, and a different lifestyle than most of you. I learned to drive tractors on the farm, literally on my Grandfather's knee... I was driving on my own before I was eight years old. I had to stand up to see over the steering wheel. I got a learner's permit at 14, and my first driver's license at 15. By that time, I had been driving farm trucks and machinery for more than half my life! I drove my own car to High School Driver's Ed classes, just so I could get a discount on insurance.

Many teens today are mature and stable enough to be trusted behind the wheel of an automobile. Some are not...

Should the ones who can handle the task safely and need to drive to attend school, or help take care of siblings, or get to after-school jobs be penalized for the few immature children who go out and do stupid things?

If the teenager demonstrates enough maturity he should be able to drive at 16. The driver licence though should be restricted for the safety of the teenager.

No I think they should raise the age to 18yrs old. There are so many accidents which involve 16 yr olds I feel they are just not mature enough I am not say all 16 yr old arent mature but alot of them are not they just dont pay attention they are just worried about how fast they can go and blowing there eardrums out with there stero systems

No. I don't think they should anyway. My step sister was killed in a car crash at 16 when she was driving. In no way should children and that's what they are is children be able to drive that young. I'd bump it up to seventeen for permit and 18 for liscence.
