Those who believe your eyes will pop out, please educate yourself before providing an answer. Yea yea yea, go ahead, give me the negative rating.

Those who provided the proper answer, bravo!

The simple truth is..your eyes WILL NOT pop out of your head if you sneeze with them open. Many people CAN and DO sneeze with their eyes open and others can train them self to do the same. Closing the eyes is simply a natural reaction or stimuli along with the actions of the facial muscles. Controlling those muscles is why some people can keep their eyes open.

The short answer is because it is a reflex.
Now to go on a bit...
Sneezing or, to give it its proper name, sternutation, happens when the inside of the nose gets irritated. A message is sent to the brain which, in turn, sends a message to the muscles that work together when you sneeze.
Some of the muscles involved are in the abdomen, the chest and the diaphragm, and also those that control the vocal cords, in the back of the throat and in the eyelids.
It is actually possible to sneeze with the eyes open and, no, the eyeballs do not fall out in this case!
Most anything that can irritate the inside of the nose can start a sneeze - like dust, cold air, or pepper. When you catch a cold in your nose, a virus has made a temporary home there and is causing swelling and irritation. People with allergies sneeze when they are exposed to certain things, such as animal fur or pollen.
Many people sneeze when they step into sunshine and about one in three sneeze when exposed to bright light. They are called photic sneezers. People inherit this trait from one of their parents.
Incidentally, the reason we use the sound "achoo" when someone sneezes comes from the medical term for photic sneezing which is Autosonal Dominant Compelling Helio-Opthalmic Outburst but don't ask me why they didn't call it "adchoo"!

The air pressure created when you sneeze is so powerful that if you plug your nose, your eyeballs will pop out of your head. So it is your body's automatic self defense to keep that from happening. I'm not a doctor but I slept at a Holiday Inn last night.

Your eyes drain into your nasal passage ways (Thats why when you cry, you tend to get a stuffy/runny nose), a sneeze on average exits your nose at roughtly 100mph, thats a lot of pressure! You close your eyes because otherwise the pressure would quickly build up behind your eyes and push them out of their sockets.

No, your eyeballs won't pop out, silly people. It is your body's natural reaction to the stimuli of sneezing. It happens so your eyes will not be sprayed with any of the germs that are exiting your mouth and nose.

When you sneeze, your eyes involuntarily slam shutting providing an air-tight seal against those 100mph airborne nasties!

Hmmm, never thought about it, but I think even if you try to keep them open you will not be able to because of the force of the sneeze.

a true but unusual fact... but if you sneeze with your eyes open you are risking your eyes popping out of your skull. It is not just a childhood rumor.
