cents in certain states. Where does a person take the bottles to claim the refund? Where does the money come from to pay the refund?

You take the bottles to recycling centers. Grocery stores usually have them in the parking lots.

You actually pay a deposit when you buy the bottles, so you are getting your money back.

When you take the recyclables to the centers, they will give you a voucher. You take it inside the market to get your money or apply it to your groceries.

The states that the refund is valid in charge a tax, which is paid when the item is purchased. The tax is where the money comes from, so the refund is only valid in those states. It helps recycle the bottles.

It is more of a deposit than a refund.

We have that here in MA. When you buy a soda for example, say the soda is $1.00, you have to actually pay $1.05 for it. Then you bring the empty bottle back to either the store you bought it from, or to a redemption center and they give you the .05 back from your deposit.
