Work on GNU began in 1983, but work on the Linux Kernel did not begin until 1991.
Windows 1.0 was released in 1985; therefore Windows is older than Linux.

Linux (IPA pronunciation: /ˈlɪnʊks/) is a Unix-like computer operating system family that uses the Linux kernel. A Linux system which includes system utilities and libraries from the GNU Project is sometimes referred to as GNU/Linux.[1]
Most development from 1984 to 1991 was done by the GNU project. After 1991, the Linux kernel developers began working on it as well as other enthusiasts. From the late-90s onward Linux also gained the support of corporations such as IBM,[2] Sun Microsystems,[3] Hewlett-Packard,[4] and Novell.[5]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Microsoft Windows is the name of several families of proprietary software operating systems by Microsoft. Microsoft first introduced an operating environment named Windows in November 1985 as an add-on to MS-DOS in response to the growing trend of graphical user interfaces (GUI). Microsoft Windows eventually came to dominate the world's personal computer market. At the 2004 IDC Directions conference, IDC Vice President Avneesh Saxena stated that Windows had approximately 90% of the client operating system market.[1]

Microsoft windows came up in the 80's and the Linux kernel was written in the early 90's.
The idea of a window and a mouse pointer was created long before Microsoft Windows came out. Microsoft has never invented anything in their history.

The original Linux was from UNIX which has been around longer than Microsoft. The question is not which is older, but which is better, and that goes to Linux, hands down!

Geez, every answer I read seemed to want to outdo all the others. In the overall scheme of things, is it really that important which operating system is older than the other?
