I dyed my hair burgundy with a semi-permanent, over brown hair, and I would like to find a store bought way to get the red out. My hair is dark brown with a slight red tint to it. What color would work best to get it back to dark brown?

Congratulations on seeing the beauty in your natural hair color. Darling Hubby and I were in Paris a few years ago, and every other woman had that burgundy hair thing going. It was NOT flattering to most of them.

Anyway, as painful as it may be for a few months, why not let your hair grow out to its natural color? It sounds beautiful. My sister has gorgeous chestnut hair such as you describe.

Skip the re-dying. Yeah, it's pretty hideous for a while (at least it seems that way), but if you do your best to make sure your hair is always trimmed, styled, etc., you will be back to natural soon enough, and then that bother of keeping up with dyes is over. Just make your hairdresser your best friend during this period! S/he can help you keep looking pretty good through means other than dying.

I know you said you want a "store bought" solution, but considering the circumstances, my advice to you is to get a good salon colorist to correct the color.

I have gone red a few times in my adult life and it can be difficult to maintain, even when a professional does it. I recently had the urge to go red again, but then I remembered how long it took to return to my natural medium/light brown. Although I enjoy changing my hair pretty regularly, I just got tired of hearing other people saying, "Oh, you colored your hair. . ."

Make sure you get a colorist who knows what s/he is doing. A couple of years ago, an enthusiastic young stylist dyed my hair way too red; a senior stylist corrected it by covering it with a medium/dark brown. It ended up a beautiful color, dark dark auburn, but when I was in sunlight, it sometimes looked bright red! It was funky and fun while it lasted.

I know it costs more to go to a salon, but your chances of ending up with something you like are much much better.
