My family is big on gift subsrciptions for magazines and such.
That was it isn't a one-time present. In addition to a "one-time gift," maybe there's an outdoor-type magazine he'd enjoy. Some of the nicer, specialty magazines are quite expensive, so they make nice gifts for people who wouldn't spend that kind of money themselves.

Also, if he likes "experience" gifts, you could get him a certificate to a nature tour/animal preserve nearby. Or if you really want to spend some money, you could book a trip for him on a "great outdoors" adventure!

How about an indoor/outdoor thermometer. My dad (elderly) loved this. Also there are remote control (to empty it) rain gauges that have monitors in the house. I sometimes make my dad small frozen meals for his birthday that he can freeze and eat when he wants to. I've also given him a day with me to do whatever we want. When I;ve done this I've taken him out to eat and we often go shopping for him and do other fun stuff. Hope this helps.

65 $1 lottery tickets with a wish to win just the amount he needs to buy him whatever he wants ! Or, you could donate money to your local animal shelter in his name...Or you could buy him some scarves (at the dollar store) for his head if he sweats when he is cutting down trees, or face masks so he dont inhale tree debris, or what I used to do when I was short of cash is make handmade "coupons" giving my dad: 1 free carwash-1 free foot rub-1 free trip to the store for him-1 free grass cutting-1 free shovel snow for him-1 free garage cleaning-etc.....Use your imagination !
