if you are a citizen or resident, you need to show a reason for obtaining one, like a work permit or if you are a student with a valid visa and have obtained an on campus job (but you will only get one that says valid employment with DHS approval), some other visa types my entitle you, but check the social security administration for details. You have to be in the USA to have the ssn or be coming to USA, but not just have one for having one purposes. you can get a tax id for filing taxes if you are not planning to work.

Everyone gets a SS# as soon as they reside in the american soil. Foreign Students, Temporary workers, and other special Visa holders all have to apply for SS numbers when they come here.
Tourists are not included.

If you're not a citizen or resident I guess the only way is to get a student visa and then you can have a temporary social security card. Other than that you can't have it.
Don't ever try to get a fake one; it will make things worse and I they catch you( they certainly will), you''l get deported or in jail.

Non- immigrant aliens working in the US are assigned a dummy Social Security number by the IRS so they can pay taxes on the money they make in the US.

Social security numbers are only issued to US citizens and legal permanent resident aliens, nobody else. Sorry.

I don't think you can do that. Contact the Social Security Administration or your immigration office and they can tell you.

the only thing you can apply for is a TIN number and to apply for one you must show your w-2 form and file taxes at the end of the year, even if you used a fake SS#

Go to your nearest INS office. Tell them you are in the US illegal but you want to get a Social Security card. That's all you need to do. Good Luck!

Are you a student? talk to your advisor.
do you legally work? talk to your employer.
You cannot just get one. You need to show your legal status and purpose of the SS card.

How can you?
You know the answer to this yourself.

Simple answer: No, you can't.

Unless ofcourse - you obtained it illegally already and you are confirming through this question.

But....wait.....

Social Security Admin., try as they may, are not the most accurate or efficient organization in the world. They can mistakenly send you a #, because of some mistaken identity.

It is not something you obtained illegally. If yes to this scenario, just use it as any citizen would or turn it back to them, with an explanation letter as any HONEST citizen would. They will appreciate that.
