They are not so afraid of death as they are afraid of dying alone. But the reality is, everyone ultimately dies alone.

It isn't called the great unknown for nothing. People are frightened of things they do not know or understand. They fear their faith in the hereafter as promised will not be there. No one has ever come back and told us what to expect, not in @2000 years, anyway.
People fear the cold earth, being buried alive, going to Hell, even the visitation. They do not want to be seen if they are not at their best.
Some people fear leaving their loved ones behind, others do not want them to grieve excessively, others worry that they won't grieve. .
I talk about it, and tried to tell my heir what I needed, as far as the legacy goes. She didn't want to hear it. My instructions were short. Plant me in the gravesite I already own, no funeral, take the house, its contents and the money, and do what you want. Call the local library, they will pick up my books, and do not let my Aunt get my good china.
For people like me, talking about it takes away the fear. I know I will not be a burden, and my heir will enjoy her legacy. And, I'm a nurse, and death has never frightened me. I care for them all the time, and consider it a priveledge to get someone ready for the mortuary.
Good question!

Death, to a lot of people, presents uncertainty in their life.
They aren't sure of what's to come, and what to look forward to. It presents them with something they can't control. People shy away from that. Just like any other obstacle they encounter that they can't control. They resent it for that. And to see someone who is controlled over their view of death is like seeing someone perform a magic trick that they can't figure out or copy. They associate that person with their resentment of death. Hince, you catch the brunt of their anger.
Another reason is because Death, to some, represents 'loss'. loss of family, things, time. People easily cling on to things. Remember when you were a child, you clinged to that favorite blanket, toy, or piece of clothing? When it came to letting go you faught. Well, since death is inevitable and you can't fight it, people are reluctant to face it.
Death isn't a bad thing. I see it as a nother step in life. Yes, I will miss those people and things in this part of my life, but I feel that I will be going to a better place.

You have the right to ask questions in life.
I think the reason why people are afraid of death is because its something thats uncertain to them. Sometimes death scares me too. To me its the new place I'll be going after this place. I know that it will be totally different than here on earth, the uncertainty scares me.

It's fear of the unknown. I personally don't think " I " will cease to exist when my body dies. I'm not as lucky as some who "know beyond any doubt" what will happen to them. I'm not sure what will happen to my "energy", but I do know that energy does not cease to exist. I may end up in a "spirit" form, I may reincarnate as an animal, person, or dinosaur. I don't think about it too much, I'm living this chapter of my life, and I'll live the next when it gets here. If people were trees, they would start to worry about loosing their leaves as soon as buds started to appear in the spring.

I know what you mean. My father in law is the same way, you say the word "death" and he turns white as a sheet. I think people act that way because they think even speaking of death will bring death. But if one has Christ, there is no need to worry about death because those in Christ have eternal life

I'm not afraid of the state of death (it won't inconvenience me any more than the state of not being born), I just hope the transition between the two is a good one.

People are afraid of what they don't know and Death is a BIG unknown for most people.
I'm not afraid because I know Jesus is my savior and when I die I'm going Home to be with Him. I have a peace about it that wipes out all fear of dying.

Death is not a pleasant subject to most people, but, there's no doubt, we all will experience it. People are afraid of the unknown, however, most people deal with it, usually, by the ideas they were taught by their parents or friends.

It's natural to be afraid of death (which is why religion was created in the first place). People who aren't afraid to die either have delusions of an afterlife or just don't enjoy this life enough to miss it.
