The answer to this question is up to you, really. It depends on what you like. There is a limitless variety of American microbrews. All craft beers contain four ingredients: barley, hops, yeast, and water. The characteristics and relative proportions of these ingredients is what makes a beer fit into a particular style. One way to narrow all the options down to a favorite would be to first decide if you prefer beers on the malty side of the spectrum or the hoppy side. There is a lot of variety here too, but malty beers tend to be sweeter or roastier and hoppy beers tend to be more aromatic and bitter. You could ask your local retailer to points you toward the malty beers or the hoppy beers, or whichever you might be in the mood for. Then there are well-balanced beers too, that have a really nice proportion of malt and hops.

My favorite well-balanced beer is Twisted Pine American Amber - just the right amount of hops and just the right amount of hops. My favorite hoppy beer is Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, and on the malty side I like Great Divide St. Brigids Porter.

You're likely to get as many Answers as there are microbrews in the USA.

I'm partial to the stuff produced by Dogfish Head Brewery in Maryland, especially their Raison d'Etre.

But then, that's just me.

Red Hook E.S.B. It has flavor, but is very drinkable when you'd like to enjoy more than one. Clean crisp and consistent. best served, as all beers, on draft. Brewed origionally in Woodinville, Washington, the demand on the east coast has led to a newer brewery in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Let me tell you ... when it hits the lips.. aaahhhh

To paraphrase Kirk Douglas in "Spartacus," the best beer is from home, no matter where that is. I am partial to Terrapin (http://www.terrapinbeer.com/) and Sweetwater (http://www.sweetwaterbrew.com/), but that is because I live in Atlanta.

Check http://beeradvocate.com/ and http://www.ratebeer.com/ for overall opinions on the zillions of craft-brewed beers available in the USA.
