From personal experience with a 1-year-old and 3-year-old, I have always used Tylenol PM or just Simply Sleep. It says on the directions to use two, but I just use one and that doesn't knock me out as much. I also keep the baby monitor on next to my bed and up loud enough so that if they are doing anything I can hear it right away and I'm up in a flash. Usually, if I don't want to take a pill, but I really need sleep, I just sit and watch TV or read a book for a little bit to relax and then just breath deep for a bit to help calm my nerves. I think it is really a matter of trying everything and seeing what works for you because everybody's body is different and what works for me may not work for you. So, good luck!! I hope you can get some rest!

My suggestion is find someone to take the 5 month old off your hands for a while and do something relaxing at least once a week. I don't know where you live at but here it is starting to warm up a bit, you might consider about 3 or 4 hours before bedtime also taking a walk for about a half hour which will help you both sleep. Watch the caffeine in the evenings especially coffee and soft drinks. If you don't see an improvement consider seeing a sleep specialist and see one anyway if this is long term.

When I have a hard time sleeping I use melatonin, which is a hormone produced by the brain so it's natural. It works by inducing sleep, but will not completely knock you out. It takes about 30 minutes to totally kick in.
When I wake up in the morning, I dont feel drowsy or drugged up. You can get it at most natural food and health stores.

hot bath before bed with aromatherapy smells like lavender will make you sleepy. If you do not have time for relaxing bath you could try just buying the scented sprays they are very relaxing and can make you sleepy. Also reading a novel or doing yoga. You also have to look at your habits before you go to bed if you watch violent programs like c.s.i. or the news your body gets a little agitated even if you dont notice it so its hard to relax.
