Throughout history, it has been the inaction of those who could have acted; the indifference of those who should have known better; the silence of the voice of justice when it mattered most; that has made it possible for evil to triumph.

Yes. What you said is true. The soldiers are there to protect the innocent and what he did goes against the beliefs of every real soldier. That is why his sentence was so harsh, to deter others from doing the same.

He is a sick minded person to have committed such an atrocity and one of the others may have already testified as to his part in the crime anyways . I would think a simple admission of the crime would have been enough and that he would have refused further testimony though since his goose is cooked anyway . He was probably hoping his life would be spared by telling and I'm sure they asked him to recount what happened . If someone admits to a crime like that it does appear rather sickening that anyone would want to hear such gruesome details about it knowing already the person is guilty . I also agree with your statement and can not even contemplate the indifference of someone standing by allowing such a thing to happen , much less participating . I also feel that regardless of the outcome of the trials , justice can not be fully served since the lives of those victims can not be restored .

This is the inevitable result of hate propaganda forced down the throats of the US since the late 1960's. The Jewish controlled media in the US has done nothing but portray Arabs as greedy, ignorant, and uncouth at best and fanatical terrorists at the worst. The Israelis on the other hand are paragons of virtue. Count how often you see a positive portayal of an Arab or Moslem?
Combined with the relentless hate propaganda coupled with 9/11 makes incidents like this possible. Sadly, it is probably not the last.

He's under oath, that's why he's telling it.

As usual, another non-com faces court martial while those ultimately responsible walk. Let's be serious here: the generals _knew_ torture was going on in Abu Ghraib because the generals of today were field officers and non-coms in Vietnam. The same dehumanization of the "enemy" that enables torture enables them to promote the rape of women in enemey territory.

It takes blind naïveté to think the generals didn't actively promote rape as a tactice, especially in country where they knew rape victims are twice victimizes. Only an idiot would say, "they didn't know how muslims felt about rape"; these are the same generals that used women and fake menstrual blood as part of the torture and abuse at Guantanamo Bay. They _knew_ how the Iraqi culture worked and they used it.

He is recounting the events as accurately as he can remember so as to make the trial to proceed easier for the court. Most probably, he entered into a plea bargain agreement with the court, that he is ready to tell everything in exchange for getting a more lenient sentence. As far as I know, he is facing a death penalty for the crime. By plea bargain, he is assured that he won't get the death penalty. His sentence might be reduced to life imprisonment. His testimonies will then be used by the court for easier prosecution of the other accused soldiers. The other soldiers, depending on the degree and gravity of their participation in the crime will either face the death penalty or given the life sentence.

What's really sad is that it's not just the one 12yr girl, nor the 14yr girl, or the 6yr boy in Abu Ghraib that was sodomized to try to get info out of his mom who had to watch. This has been happening a lot. These things happen when violence and hatred of a people are endorsed by a government. These right-wing pundits, administration and congressional proponents have been pushing this idea of Arabic people being inherantly evil for so long, people (especially those caught up in the middle of it, like our military) start seeing them as sub-human, and these atrocities happen.

MC Hummer, yeah, you nailed it right on the head. Thats exactly what our leaders told us to do as we went out on patrol. Only a fool like you would believe that is what we are told. This was an action by 1 man, a sad action, but this happens in all parts of the world, it just so happens that this was a soldier in Iraq. Its no more sad than any act of rape in the world, only its a big deal now because he is a soldier, and thats sad. Rape is not okay under any circumstance, don't let his job cloud your judgement of the crime. This happens in every country.

To the one above me, Keep abortion legal.

It's so terribly sad. A young teen, her family...dead. For what? It's disgusting. Those in the military that let soldiers rape can never be called heroes. What do these males tells their mother's, wives, or girlfriends?

It's a problem in all wars. Men away from home, the conquerers can do no wrong, etc. It is evil. These things are overlooked by the commanders. Too bad

Why did he recount it?...Becuase he had to testify as he was on trial........Why did he do it? Only he knows the answer to that....

How you respond when times are the toughest, is what defines you as soldier. The only people who should judge him are his fellow soldiers who are over there with him.....no one else!
