I've heards tieing your hair up can cause breaks in your hair but I've also heard if you sleep with your hair down and it's on your face during the night you will break out :( for the most part I don't think the seond part is true but sometimes I sleep with a cloth headband on just in case :) so that my hair is out of my face but it would have any damage ;o)

No just the opposite. If you tie your head before you go to sleep(w/ silk or satin) you are trying to ensure that the hair stays in place and that the hair stays moist and wont break off, unless you use a cotton scarf then it's the opposite. Cotton will dry and break your hair.
If you were talking about on your face yes will prevent that.

No, it's stop your hair becoming tangled and break off, if you use a silk scarf, they hold the moisture in your hair. Black women wrap their hair up to prevent hair breakage, especially if their hair is relaxed.

No, but it will give you a headache if you're tenderheaded. Ouch! Too much tension/strain on the scalp.

No it doesn't, but what is does do is break off your hair where the hairband is. It's not good to sleep with your hair tied back.
