Depends on why they drink-are they drinking to suppress- if so they'll therapy and some behavior modification techniques to help them break the addiction cycle. Once you're an addict until the "Why" is solved it will just be something else food, sex, speed, anything to feed the addictive urge.

Alcoholism can be cured by quitting, but quitting is alot harder than just dropping the bottle and saying no more. If they drink because of depression or to get away from problems that surround them, that would needed to be taken care of as well to prevent a relapse.
There are also maaaaaannnnnyyyy groups and clinics that help people suffering from chornic alcoholism. But the withdrawl symptoms alone are enough to make you start drinking again. The shaking alone can last over a month. Alot of people need drugs to get through the withdrawl symptoms at first.
But I honestly think going through it is worth it in the long run.

depends on if that is the only problem. Most people can if that is the only problem they have. but they also have to know what the triggers are that make them want to drink or do drugs.
alcoholism is a disease so you have to heal the whole person, not just the drinking, but what makes them want to drink or they will go right back to drinking or doing drugs.
it is often called a progressive disease with symptoms that include a strong need to drink despite negative consequences, such as serious job or health problems. Like many other diseases, it has a generally predictable course, has recognized symptoms, and is influenced by both genetic and environmental factors that are being increasingly well defined.
I hope this helps

The problem of alcoholism, yes. It's the other issues you need to deal with, like why you drink.

It only takes one drink to go downhill from there. when you have an addiction, you must stay away regardless
