I don't want to say because it is a personal spiritual struggle, not a contest or game. But people still ask, even fellow Catholics. So what can I say to not reveal what I'm abstaining from but still keep the situation friendly?

Just lie and say candy or something. Really, it's not that big a deal, and I cannot imagine that this little white lie would be considered sinful.

Not only are you protecting your privacy, but you're letting the questioner off easy. If I asked someone and they said "well, it's private, blah blah blah," I'd actually feel a bit offended. I'd be tempted to say something like "well, excuuuuuuuuse me!"

You can tell them that youv'e given up your life to Jesus.
It would be appropriate seeing lent is an observance of what Jesus gave of himself.
I think that would probably appease most people without having them want to pry further.

You can tell them that you gave up answering questions about what you gave up for Lent. Laugh, and look them dead in the eye. Chances are they won't pursue the matter any further.

Just tell them that it is personal. If you are going back to it after lent, then what is the point in giving it up? Backsliding does not please God.
