I'm considering buying a stungun for self-defense and was wondering about the potential of having the device accidentally turned against me in close encounters.

You will not be shocked unless you are between the electrodes or touching the electrodes. Not even if you are standing in water. It could, however be used against you if the offender is able to get it from you, just like any other weapon, lethal or not.

If you are referring to the "TAZER" of which shoots the two needle typed probes...here's what will happen...

IF you touch ANY point BETWEEN the two probes...you WILL be shocked.

If you touch any part without touching between the two probes...you will not feel the shock!

Electroshock weapon technology uses a temporary high-voltage low-current electrical discharge to override the body's superficial muscle-triggering mechanisms.

No it doesn't work that way. Trust me the taser training has a guy holding each side of you and they don't get shocked. It has to do with how many amps there are, not volts. So it is not a problem, even though it sounds like it would be.

No. If it is the taser type of less-than-weapon you could be shocked if you were to make contact with both wire leads, completing an electical circuit.

If at the time the person who is being shocked is touching someone else they will be shocked as well. Its a current and a current will travel.
