The only hostel I know that is cheap is near the Main railway station in Sydney. We stayed there for 2 nights when we were down under. I'm afraid I can remember the name, but its literally next door to the station. Sorry I am not much help there.

I am jealous of your trip, I hope you have a great time.

With regards to the heat, its going to depend on where you are. Cairns / Darwin is pretty much hot all through out the year. But the further south you go then the colder it will be. Melbourne in the winter can be fairly nippy. and Tasmania I understand can see snow.

Australia
**************
Get on the greyhound buses and just hop on and hop off at each place you fancy stopping.
Most hostels you can just turn up to.
Can get a bit breezy on the coast, take flip flops, combat pants but jeans for if it does get a bit cool.
When you go to Byron Bay, stay at the arts factory, book in advance, really cool hippy place, different to any other hostel i've stayed in.
Cost of living is about same as USA I think. Not quite as expensive as UK but not mega cheap either.

New Zealand

Great place, but very very wet! Similar temperatures to the UK. If you're going to do all the adrenaline sports, bungees, skydives, pot holing, you'll need a fair amount of cash!

Fiji
******
I'll let you know when i've been!

Seems like you'll be in quite varied climates, take layers rather than large wooly jumpers or coats, it's amazing how a few layers of relativley thin material can keep you warm - or invest in some good base layers, so if it's a particulary cool evening but you don't want a bulky jumper on just shove the top on under your shirt and the trousers under your combats, you'll be fine!

Quite a few questions:

Firstly there is a set of directory links to choose hostels by price and location - just focus in on the one star options and sort the columns.

Clothing - when are you coming where are you going. Summer is hot, winter ( except in Darwin and North Queensland is pretty cold ( bring a jumper and jacket ) - but you can buy woolies for peanuts in a local store like Target.

Work is easy if you have good attitude - go to http://www.seek.com.au - remember to get permission to work visa - check out the Australia.com website below

Best you do some more research

In Fiji, most are fairly cheap on the mainland, Traveller's in Nadi is my personal favorite, and everyone loves the Beachhouse. Cool Bananas is the best hostel in Australia (I consider it the best hostel anywhere), in Melbourne the Coffee Palace is fairly cheap, in Sydney King's Cross area has some of the cheaper spots.

Fiji is always hot, and Australia has pretty mild weather, Melbourne can get cool during their winter but rarely going below freezing. The rest of the country is even more mild (except for Tasmania, it's wild there hail in the summer).

$a million,500 is a relativly much less high priced fee. My advice is to look spectacular into some airlines, jetstar flies to hawaii yet i'm now no longer particular approximately nyc. attempt looking into Qantas, United, Air Canada, Hawaiian, etc.. i rather have presently booked airfars from Sydney to Honolulu for quite below $a million,200. It replaced into far extra less expensive to e book with the aid of using a visit agent then it replaced into on line, which replaced into outstanding. For holiday to New Zealand i might seem into Air Newzealand. they have extra less expensive flights then optimal airlines yet are literally no longer the utmost severe high quality. for superb severe high quality seem into Emirates. the U. S.$ is presently finding out to purchase around $a million.10 AU, making it extra less expensive for human beings to flow returned to Australia then any incorrect way around, I wouldnt be complaining too lots. EDIT - If subject concerns are extra high priced then you need to to be grateful which you get them extra less expensive each and each and each and all of the time, and not complaining it rather is had to pay what we'd prefer to for some weeks on a similar time as on trip. on a similar time via fact the $ maintains to be relativly equivalent then I see no reason at the back of courtroom docket circumstances, if it have been to well worth double then particular uncomplicated sufficient.

You can only work with correct visa.

Climate hot, sometimes humid.

Natural fibres - cotton, linen - man made fibre too hot.

Oz and NZ winter is our summer - more rainy temperature can drop night time. day time temperature in their winter can be as high as 24 degrees Celsius.

Hottest time of year over there is Christmas time.

www.bugaustralia.com

or www.bugpacific.com for fiji... best guide.

Hostel in aus generally $20 a nightoften a day off or two if booking a night.

Dont stay more then a fortnight in Sydney as many sad ***** spend months just going to the local bars in scummy kings cross with other brit backpackers only getting pissed and dont even go down the hill.

In sydney:

Do the Botanical gardens tour and see the cockatoos in the park, go to the zoo and inside the kangaroo enclosure. U could climb the bridge but expensive.

Scubadive with grey nurse sharks in Manley Aquarium

Sod Kings Cross the life bar wise is Jelly wrestle night wednessday at the Oxford Tavern/Rita in the suberb Petersham.. (purple line few stops from central), petersham station, up bridge stairs right end of bridege left, up hill to main road, right, 100m up the road to cross roads... get there for 930 check train times as far apart. When fin get out quick or taxi.

Very lively, silly funny and crazy.

Bonbi beach aint all that the northern beaches are better, far better.

If in season see the harbour Whales. Note the harbour while trendy looking has lots of muggings, dont make pals there with guys wgho want to take you round the corner as they shared their drink with you.

Sydney to Byron bay heading north via the outback meeting outback folk... this is a real road trip adventure and you see the real aussie land out of the cities... Must do ***!!!

Byron bay stay at
Arts factory for a bit
http://www.artsfactory.com.au/

And try and book some nights in the tee pee.

Bryon bay is on the edge of the hippie area of Australia and is a surfer town. Arts factory is a bit kookie that way but also spend time in the other hostels with free surf boards and stuff. Note Black dog surf does in deed have a surfing dog who comes on lessons and dolphins in the bay.

Coach to Gold coast/surfers paradise.

Here Sleeping in is a good place to stay. Movie sceen in the pool, limo pick up, walking distance to coach station and dorms have a lounger (ask for the big one in the annex down the road).

Tourist city, very built up, mad part times during Indy week with street racing or schoolies (end of high school debauchery)

Note here is the place to do the snorkle with tame sharks or the ONLY place you could get away with scuba diving with sharks

http://www.seaworld.com.au/entertainment/animal_adventures.cfm?event_id=13

Not sissy ones either but a tiger and bull shark which are not nice like grey nurse sharks. Think you are in some sort of acrylic cage.

http://www.seaworld.com.au/entertainment/animal_adventures.cfm?event_id=13

Theme park land here. And go to Draculas for a meal and horror show.

You can find work here but careful some rip off backpackers and don't pay.

(especailly avoid anyone who moves cars around)

Lots of other things to do.

BUT DO NOT NOT NOT DANGLE ANYTHING IN THE CANALS OR GET IN THEM, THEY ARE FULL OF HUMAN EATING BULL SHARKS... THATS NOT A JOKE.

On to Brisbane... Place to work with some clubs. Go to nearby Morton Island to hand feed wild dolphins.

On to Noosa... Note red triangles signs mean stand still, realise you are in deep **** and walked where you should not. phone for help, or back track your steps very very carefully. Red trianlge signs are for land mines and unexploded bombs... NOT A JOKE. was used to WW2 target practice and some areas aint been cleared..

But you can kite surf and closest place to go to Steve irwin, Croc Hunters zoo.

Next stop Harvey bay... naff all to do but go whale spotting bar its the Gate way town for lovely Fraser island... National park with wild dingos and other wild life you can explore with a 4wd land drover (go with palace or others who have a hard toped vehical as the island has backpack theves who know the camping spots. or with a tour.

Top place to see.!!!!!!!!!!!

Town of 1770... for dive tirps to a ship reck or a snorkle trip to the poster island for the barrier reef and start of it, a coral island of birds.

If with Oz experience coachs you may then stop at DINGO cattle ranch... if you do
TAKE THE HELICOPTER RIDE
TAKE THE HELP COPTER RIDE

CHOPPER RIDE!!!!

ONLY PLACE YOU CAN GET AN AEROBATIC LOW LEVEL 10 FOOT OFF THE GROUND ZIG ZAG BETWEEN TREES CHASE COWS CHOPPER RIDE LIKE IN A DOGFIGHT.

then Airlie beach... best stay a while and book your yacht trip here... not with some package got in Sydney or gold coast or Brisbane as you can get ladt minte deals which are cheaper...

or if a girl in possession of boobs... there are lots of competitions of thew wet t shirt, pole dance (boys can enter this one) and jelly wrestle variety where you can win yacht rips...

DONT GO FOR THE CHEAP TANGALOMA BOATS THEY ARE CRAP...

AIM FOR $400 ISH FOR A TRIP ON A MAXI YACHT '80 FOOT RACING'OR IDEALLY THE AVATAR TRIMARAN

http://www.seedownunder.com.au/destination/queensland/whitsundays/whitsunday-sailing/adventure-sailing/avatar/index.html

Must do... yacht trip to the barrier reef and whitsuday amazing beach islands
Top stay , stay at koalas and party at magnums.

Next Townsville where you can stay at magnetic island and chill... Must stay at Base...

Its on the beach and coral reef... nice beach parties.

Then tully river for white water rafting then Cairnes... To go on barrier reef dive trips inc one with lots of sharks... the further out you go ie coral sea or cod hole the better.

Place to work mostly hotel maid service.

Do aborigonie activites and go see the rain forest in table lands or cape tribulation... You can hire a car.

then head inland for darwin, and ayres rock etc.

If you get to Melborne... good spot to stay, only alterntive club scene ... go see the penguins comming home to phillip island... great thing to do.

*******************

Also on route go via thailand and go here... www.tigertemple.co.uk or the temple of the tigerts search on net.

In bankoko best travel on subway or monorail. Busses are like 7bhatt (nothing)

taxis always insist on meters, and get way from tourist spots and hotels.

if staying in Bangkok only book the first few nights unless on a tight schedule as like cheaper hotel next door... ie travel agent 1200bhatt, next door 350 bhatt... get the idea?

Dont be a typical dumb succer tourist thinking he is smarter then thais trying to get things like cheap VIP busses in Kho Sand Road or other backpaker touristy spots.(ie intercity coaches)

They are illegal, shite and likly to get stuff nicked or have air con dribbling onto wet crapmed seats all night...

From offical Thai bus stops they will be like first class on airlines with stewardesses, videos, food the works for cheaper.

or sleeper trains. Motorcycle taxis also good.

Avoid ping pong show upstairs bars as nasty and you will have the door locks and huge cash demanded to let you out... if ant to check out girls go to all the gogo bars which are fine.

Avoid tuktuks as best for thais... if you get in odds are you get all day tour around all shops that give them petrol vouchers and miss out where you want to go.

Motorcycle taxis good for travel...

Street food is fantasic and cheap

Outside bangkok look for pretty pickup trucks as are bhatt busses like taxi bus... bus if cheap and stop along way, taxi if pay more.
