Hi. I am looking for any information on the eating habits of the Japanese. Are they into meal replacement snacks as Americans are? I wondering because I am doing a project in school on trying to promote a low-carb, meal replacement snack bar. This product is a convenience product for a customer on the go. Please, I know I should do my own work but I am. I'm seeking information of anyone that knows the Japanese culture or that can help me with any information on this topic. Thank you. Oh, by the way..I am not directing this to Japanese only. If anyone can help me that would be great. This is a project that I HAVE to promote a snack-bar, I don't have a choice of what to promote. So, even hints that will help me to attract the Japanese to a healthy snack-bar. Thanks.

I can't help you too much, as I don't work alongside many typical Japanese people, but I know energy drinks are HUGE here. At any convenience or grocery store you can buy little bottles of drinks that contain vitamins and minerals. I don't think meal replacement snacks are big, but they exist. Most Japanese buy what are called "bentos", which are pre-made lunch packages that are fairly healthy (although stuffed with preservatives) and not too expensive (generally about $4).

Nope.. the Japanese do not need meal replacement as they are not obese like Americans. They eat a natural low-carb diet rich in proteins. I would doubt that the snack bar you are promoting will sell there.

I'm not too sure if Japanese people are into meal replacement bars or not..but there are some meal replacement snacks & drinks in Japan. However, Japanese are not into Low-Carb diets. Atkins was never popular in Japan and I don't think it will ever be...since majority of Japanese meals consists of carbohydrates such as rice and noodles.

I doubt rice is a low-carb food. But I know it is a staple of the Japanese diet. Rice has 79g carbs per 100g serving.


I believe the trick would be avoiding high-fat and fried foods. Japanese diet focuses mostly of fish and rice, and last I was there, a large soda was the size of a kid's soda here in the states. I believe the Japanese have a much better grip on portion control than their American counterparts.

they already have many things that we have.. either through domestic means, habits, tastes or through foreign trade with america.
