Well, before you can convince them you need the answers to a couple of questions:

1) Is it worth keeping?: It may be a POS and you simply do not know that.

2) If it is in good shape, why are your parents selling it? Are there any issues here that you can address. for example
1) if they have to pay additional insurance charges, can you foot that bill (welcome to the real world).
2) Does it need some repair work that you can perform?

3) Are they concerned about your driving skills? If so what are their concerns and can you address them?

Start with these basic questions and answers. Deal with your parents in a straightforward manner (don't whine or 'pleeeeeessseee' as that reflects on the level of maturity that you will possibly be using while driving). If you can approach this on a mature and direct level you may have a chance.

If you do get the car, then drive responibly and demostrate that to hem to avoid loosing it.

good luck.....

Added comments:

a) Don't raise the issue of 'I feel its my car' with your parents. Its not your car unless they SAY its your car and that will just put you at odds with them

b) DO point out that you are doing the maintence and offer to have the quality of your maint. confirmed by a mechanich to bolster their confidence.

Above all, keep in mind that these are your PARENTS... they are concerned about you and your future. You need to show how lettting you have this car fits that goal.

Wait until you are all in a very public place and then drop to the ground and start kicking and screaming. Thrash your arms and legs all over the place and yell at the top of your lungs, “I want the car! I want the car!”

tell them that it will be less expensive in the long run because then they won't have to pay tons of money to get you a car
