It's difficult to give you any advice here as you don't say what you do when you're in the gym. I recently left my job as a fitness instructor but having worked in gyms, I know that many people don't work as hard as they could so it may be as simple as pushing yourself that bit harder, and perhaps trying to control your portions when you're eating. There's no such thing as "bad food" (with the exception of trans fats) but as long as you only have a little of what you fancy and eat sensibly, your diet should be fine.

When you're in the gym, trying running, it's the best form of CV for fat burning. If you don't like it, just start small - run a minute at a comfortable pace then walk a minute and continue for maybe 10 - 15 minutes to start with, working up to a longer period on the treadmill and longer periods running.
Also ensure you're doing some weights as well as CV. The more muscle you have, the more fat burning capacity you have. You won't morph into Rambo overnight so don't worry...if it was that easy, every man in the gym would be huge!!! So, ask advice from one of the gym instructors as to what would benefit you - that's what they're there for!
With your swimming, make sure you're not just bobbing up & down the pool for 30 minutes. Try timing your laps and aim to improve your lap times. Alternatively, count the number of laps you fit into your 20-30 minutes and try to fit more in each time.

What exactly do you do when you go to the gym?? It would be easier to make suggestions if more details of your workout routine were known. If you're not doing so already, you want to make sure that you incorporate a weight lifting routine. You get the best benefits if you do cardio, lift, and then do more cardio. Since you swim this could be really easy for you to do. If you are a novice to the weight room it would be best for you to have someone get you up to speed. Otherwise you could injure yourself. I would suggest working with a trainer for a few sessions, so that they can show you the proper technique. Many people have the misconception that lifting will make you bulky, but, on the contrary, incorporating a weight lifting routine can bring about some pretty amazing results. Muscle burns more calories than fat, so you will not only be burning calories by lifting, but also increasing your metabolism.

Other than the weight routine, you may want to incorporate a few more days of excercise a week. Not necessarily going to the gym, but maybe doing a cardio or pilates video at home. And of course, watch what you eat.

Its not a huge amount of exercise, so why would you expect to see a huge difference? That amount of time 3 days a week is a bare minimum for cardiovascular health.

Swimming is a great exercise, but is a bit light in terms of burning calories (if thats what you're asking?) because it is non-weight bearing and uses smaller muscle groups.

The real plus to swimming is that you can do a LOT of it without injury.

That's why elite swimmers typically spend much more time training than elite runners. Because they CAN.

Add more days a week, or go for more time when you DO go.

Perhaps add in some running or cycling on days you don't go to the gym.

Well, to answer this question we would need to know what you are doing in the gym. Intensity is the key. Eating is one thing. It definitely has an influence on the outcome, but if it hasn't changed, and you have begun exercising your body should have shown decent signs of improvement. You should talk to a trainer, or just ask some of the people in the gym. Most likely they have had similar experiences.

It's impossible to know why you are not getting results without knowing exactly:

a) what you are doing at the gym and for how long and with what weight and intensity; and

b) your diet.

I train three times a week and keep a training log so I can track my progress. I also do CV twice a week (football and badminton). I'm getting good results, but that is only because.........

....I keep a record of what I eat in terms of calories, carbs and fat and by doing this I know exactly what I'm taking in. This is vital.

If you're serious, you need to record what you are doing and get agree it with an exercise/nutrition expert.

Switch up your cardio a little if you are able. Eliptical trainer or stationary bike, whatever you can do. Add some time on to your workout if you can, say 40 to 45 minutes. I am a huge fan of weight training. I agree that exercise alone does not work. Watch what you are eating. Your body gets used to certain exercises, you have to mix it up. Good luck!

When u are at gym do cardio- the best type is runnin. what this does is speed up ur meatbolism for ages (and i mean hours) after ur workout. this means that u are still losin weight after ur workout.

If u want to gain muscle then use the machine. make sure u do upper body and lower body on different days
also ensure 48hrs rest after a strength workout. this gives muscle rest so it can grow

I too did all this - what you also have to do is cut down on eating - if you are carrying extra weight exercise alone will not shift it.
