The world's largest owl is the Blakiston's Fish Owl
It has a wing span of 6 ft. (182 cm)
Ranges basically through Japan

9 feet for an owl -- even your Pharaoh (Desert) Eagle Owl (4 foot, 120 cm wingspan) -- is urban legend.

Interesting, I've found conflicting information on the Net. One site claims the Blakiston's is the largest. Another site claims the Eurasian Eagle-owl is the largest (6.5 feet, 200 cm wingspan).
At any rate, there are no 9 footers.

There is no such owl with a 9 ft wing span. Even Golden eagles aren't that big. The largest Owl in the world is the European Eagle Owl and they have only ever got to about 6 1/2 ft and have been known to kill Golden Eagles at night.
I think you are thinking of the Pharoh's Eagle Owl.

I am not sure which species of owl you are talking about, but the largest owl is the Great Gray or Lapland Owl. Its found in the farth north and has a wingspan of 5ft maximum.
