it strongly depend by your country of origin.
if you have some kinda of invitation letter form the university it will be surely easier to apply for the visa.
maybe you can travel using just your passport if you own an optic scanning passport, but it even depend from your country of origin.
there are strongly possibility that you will need a visa to travel in the united states, a business visa, maybe. however check the internet site of usa embassy in your country in wich surely you will find the application form and other additional information

First you have to apply for a visa to any American consulate or embassy. That it is the first step. Which means a student visa. And it is important from what country are you coming. I recommend you to do it by the book, I mean legally. Good luck.
