238 Many religions invoke God as "Father". The deity is often considered the "father of gods and of men". In Israel, God is called "Father" inasmuch as he is Creator of the world. Even more, God is Father because of the covenant and the gift of the law to Israel, "his first-born son". God is also called the Father of the king of Israel. Most especially he is "the Father of the poor", of the orphaned and the widowed, who are under his loving protection.<2 Sam 7:14; Ps68:6>

239 By calling God "Father", the language of faith indicates two main things: that God is the first origin of everything and transcendent authority; and that he is at the same time goodness and loving care for all his children. God's parental tenderness can also be expressed by the image of motherhood, which emphasizes God's immanence, the intimacy between Creator and creature. The language of faith thus draws on the human experience of parents, who are in a way the first representatives of God for man. But this experience also tells us that human parents are fallible and can disfigure the face of fatherhood and motherhood. We ought therefore to recall that God transcends the human distinction between the sexes. He is neither man nor woman: he is God. He also transcends human fatherhood and motherhood, although he is their origin and standard: no one is father as God is Father.

In Hindu philosophy, God is the only Purusha(male). The entire creation is said to be Prakriti(female). We may perceive number of males in the world. In reality they are like donning the role of male by female characters in an all ladies college. I don't mean to demean the males. In fact the all power full, all encompassing God is the only supreme being and He only can be termed so. Others gain their power and intelligence only from Him. Hence all others are dependent upon Him. Hence it would be correct to refer to God as 'HE'. nagarajan.

I had a buddhist explain this well. (He attended Catholic schools)He said that God was often referred to according to the role he played in humans lives. The jews and christians often said" the Lord will provide", or "God Help me", "protect me". These injunctions were , and still are to an extent, roles filled by males, particularly fathers toward their wives and children.

Because the people who wrote the bible did not invent a pronoun for god. In the Chinese language bible, they use a specific pronoun for god.

I am an atheist so the subject does not matter to me. I am just giving some information that I know.

We prefer God to be in an image we can understand and imagine. All though God states God is neither male of female and unlike anything we can imagine...humans that we are we'd rather have it our way. Its just easier linguistically to say he or him rather than God all the time. Humans are lazy that way. That, however, gives lots of religious followers the impression that because we want God to be like us so we can understand and imagine God and cause we prefer to think of God as a him instead of an it or her....than God must be male and so men are the chosen gender and favoured by God....blah blah blah. Most religious men(of all religions) prefer God to be like them....then to make themselves like God(not LIKE God but following Gods words)...which puts them on the same level as God(so they imagine)...and thus we have worship of man instead of worship of God.

That is to give God a human quality. It is easier for humans to relate to humans so they gave Him the title of 'He' to represent a human male. This is just an ambiguation. God is neither male or female, nor does He necessarily look like a human.

Would you rather worship something that looked like a Griffon? (Head of a hawk, body of a lion, wings of an eagle). It's just easier to worship something that represents the people doing the worshiping.
